I too would like to get more heat out of my heater.
I have my heater core and the radiator plumbed in parallel. I have a shut
off valve in the loop to the heater core. But even when the valve is open,
I am sure that most coolant goes to the radiator. I am hesitant to put a
valve or any restriction in the line to the radiator for safety reasons even
though I am sure that would make the heater work better.
Do any of you have it plumbed to put all the flow through the heater core
all of the time?

Assuming the engine has a T-stat, then if you connect the heater supply line upstream
of the T-Stat, you'll get the flow you need through your heater core. The return line
from the heater should be connected somewhere on the low pressure side of the water
pump. You should not need any further restriction to induce flow through the heater
core. There is enough flow restriction through the T-stat to induce flow into the
heater core.
Don't connect the cooling radiator and the heater core in series. Connecting them in
parallel won't work very well or at all either.
You'll probably need a control valve in the heater line, however some people only
block air flow through the heater core for control. That's not as good because you
don't get ventilation air when it's too warm to use the heater.

Randy & Darin C What size hose is the radiator hose and what size is the heater hose? I haven't got my 582 set up yet C but my heater core tubes are for 5/8" hose with the radiator hose being 1" I would imagine that the largest point of restriction (least flow) would be at the thermostat. Whether the thermostat restriction would result in more or less flow than a 5/8's hose C I don't know C but am interested in finding out because I was planning on putting all coolant thru heater core in winter. However the cable acuated valve Darin uses may be the answer if you could leave it at a partially open setting and adjust the coolant temp. if too much restriction resulted with full flow through the heater core.

Paul,
Thanks for your response. A thermostat sounds great! I need to look for a
way to add one ... in the right place.
Thanks much!
Randy
Pat, I need to check hose size. I think that I did have to get reducers....

I picked up an inline 1" inch (other size are available) thermostat housing from a motorcycle / ATV bone yard for $5. You can find them in many configurations so you won't have to run your hose to the tail and back. The Honda car thermostat fit into my old Ninja 1000 motorcycle housing. If a thermostats fails it generally fails in the open position. In the summer if your worried remove the thermostat from the housing.

Randy,
I don't really know how much coolant goes through my heater core...I just know that my heater puts out a ton of heat. My valve is in the heater circuit not in the radiator circuit so if it fails open or closed it does not affect the coolant flow from the engine to radiator or visa-versa. I do have a set of radiator louvers that are produced by Lowell but have not got them installed yet as I have not needed them with the H20 temps I have but I suspect in another month or so they will be necessary. This simply restricts the amount of air that passes through the radiator and thus allows the pilot to control the water temp. I posted a pic of my valve installation on the other thread titles "Cabin Heater".
I looked at installing a thermostat on my coolant and oil but opted not to simply to reduce the complexity (and chances for failure) of the plumbing system. I like the idea of the manually controlled louvers much better than the thermostat for coolant and for oil, my last Fox simply had an adjustable aluminum plate that reduced the airflow over the oil cooler to keep the temps up in the winter months. Having said this, I know two guys that run the oil thermostat on the Rotax and have had 0 problems with them. I have had plenty of problems with automotive thermostats.
