*ADDED ANOTHER*

Hello, all. It's been a while but I have busy in the shop with the Waiex. I've logged 750+ hours with the wings and most of the fuse done. Hopefully it will be on the gear in a week or so and flying sometime in the fall or winter.
My Firestar still gets plenty of attention and even has a Quickie 1 as a hangar mate (which will be restored when the Waiex is done).
I tried to post this video a while back but was unsucessful but then Youtube came along. I forget how high I was but 3000' sounds about right.
Anyway, here is some summer quiet flying...

Kip,

That is a great video, I hope you post many more ! That gyro-copter did some incredible tight turns over the runway, especially the landing... The shot down of the runway between your feet was nest, I would like to see more out of the gyro-copter, and maybe a couple pictures of it, I did not realize how small it was until I saw your feet.

That was a great video. I really like the viewing angle you were able to get from it.

That dead stick video motivated me to finally do something I've been thinking about for awhile. Yesterday I flew to a nearby airport that rarely sees traffic and did an overhead approach from about 1800 feet AGL, with the engine off and prop stopped. The factory (Allegro) says that best glide speed is 70 mph so I set up a glide at that IAS, made two complete 360 degree circles and saw that I was going to be a bit high when crossing the threshold and added full flaps, touching down around mid-field.

I've done engine off, prop stopped glides before but only on final. What amazed me is the large difference in descent rate with prop stopped compared to idle power glide under same conditions. At idle power the descent rate is 400 fpm but at the same speed with prop stopped it was 700 fpm. Moral of the story, as some have urged on this list before, is that you don't really know how an airplane will perform with the engine and prop stopped until you test it in a safe environment.

The advertised glide ratio for the Allegro is 12 to 1 but my testing showed it to be about 8 to 1 (70 IAS on my ASI is about 65 mph TAS). I suspect it will better at higher speeds but won't know for sure until I test it again. BTW, with idle power 400 fpm yields about 14 to 1 glide ratio.

I will do this test at various glide speeds with the FS when I finish the rebuild.

Obviously, at idle power some thrust (or a lot less drag) is being produced than with prop stopped. There is a theoretical prop/engine rpm that equates to zero thrust for each glide speed and prop ptich. For those interested, I've attached a spreadsheet that calculates this theoretical prop/engine rpm for a given prop pitch and glide speed. Any rpm below this zero thrust rpm will result in more drag and any rpm above this zero thrust rpm will net some thrust.

In the third video I used a piece of wood to bolt the camera on via the tripod mount hole and then taped the rig to the boom as far back as possible...
