Hello, I'm looking for help finding the original 2.5" L.E. spar tube with extruded sheer web for my damaged left wing. There is a dent aprx. 4" long not quite out to the strut attach fitting. I'm curious to see if it can't be repaired. Any & all ideas will be appreciated. Thanks, John S.

John,
I'm guessing it's deep enough that you don't want to just
live with it. If it's deep it can't be repaired, since you'll cause
even more damage to the metal pulling it out. One thing you could do
that would be easier than a new spar, although uglier, would be to
glue and screw an aluminum patch over it. A lot depends on where it
is relative to the strut bracket and ribs.

Guy, We've considered the patch idea & think that may work. Pops is an A&P & we've built a couple kitfoxs now. I would like to find some 2.5" tube for patch material & see if anyone has ribs. Again thanks for the input. John S.

You’re doing the right thing by looking for a new spar. Why not try John Mc Bean?
Spar repairs are always suspect. With this type of spar The only repair that I can see working is an outside sleeve. Trying to find the right size ID sleeve may be fun and it will add a bit of weight to your plane.

Noel, Thanks for the input. I've talked to john Mcbean. they offer a spar but doesn't have the extruded web. I've since pulled most of the dent out. We're going to put a patch front & back. Does anyone have any parts from a speed wing conversion? (ie;ribs, spar tube peice) Thanks John S.

Joe,
I understand the desire to repair your wing spar and it indeed may be possible. I do not who you may have consulted in your quest to determine if the spar is repairable but I would encourage to seek the advice of a certified airframe mechanic who has done this type of repair before and not some “shade tree mechanic”, if you get my drift. (The world is full of people with advice that don’t know what they are talking about.) It is not just matter of “patching” it but it needs to be a properly made “stiffener” primarily on the side of the dent (possibly both inside and out) which will now always be prone to bending. An airframe mechanic with this experience will know what the rule is for his and how the stiffener needs to be designed. I am not an air frame mechanic but I do speak from experience. Good luck!

I am just finishing up after replacing both of my rear spars. One with a
small but deep dent at jury strut attach and the other repaired by prev.
owner with a splice for last three feet. The new spars offered by Kitfox are
much stronger with the insert than the extruded ones ever dreamed of. Given
the extreme ease of replacing a front spar and the expense and time to
recover a wing. I don't think I would even consider a repair. How exactly
would you or could you determine how much strength it has lost?

I would think that repairing a spar is flirting with disaster. Not much you can do when an outboard wing folds up. Please be careful.

Round tubes are not repairable. The loads on the tubes can not be transferred evenly by any patch either internal or external. The lack of description of the exact location and extent of damage make any speculation on its repair suspect.
Because the leading edge of the wing is a structural spare, leading edge dents are structural defects and not just aerodynamic anomolies as on some aircraft.
