I am changing coolant in my 912UL from Evans+ to Antifreeze. Has
anyone changed the the fluid in their airplane from Evans to
Antifreeze. Any suggestion as to how much to flush the system prior
to filling with Antifreeze, also what brand of Antifreeze do they
recommend.

Thanks, Mike

Mike:

I don't know how much you have to flush the system before filling with 50/50
(water/antifreeze mix), but I do know that the mix should use distilled
water with the orange color antifreeze. Don't use the green antifreeze
because it is not compatible with aluminum.

Michael,

There is no real need to flush the cooling system after using Evans +.
It is mainly propylene glycol, which mixes nicely with water. By the
way, there is no problem with adding water to Evans+. What happens is
just that any amount of water will tend to lower the advertised higher
boiling point of pure Evans.
Ordinary 50/50 mix contains ethylene glycol. No problem with traces of
Evans in 50/50 .

I think you will find most anti freezes are good for aluminum now days. Just read the jug it will tell you for sure. Most engine cooling systems now days have aluminum in them some more than others.
I changed back from Evans to 50/50 because of the increase in temps (30F) on my particular plane. I used Evans last 912 and it was fine because my engine was more exposed and cooling was a little better. I do like Evans I just have a temp problem in my plane with it.
I pop the lowest hose off the system and and put my hand over the fill spout on the coolant and blow down through the system. This gets most of it out. Like mentioned above you really don't need to get all the Evans out. It has the same make up as a lot of antifreeze's just no water.
When you go back to 50/50 you need to lower your max coolant temp to 248F. If you don't have a coolant gauge then watch the CHT temps as they are very close.

You never said why you wanted to change? If you don't have a temp issue why change.

I am far from being an expert in cooling, and also about EVANS+, but I do know that Evans itself, every time you buy a bottle, gives you a sticker to be put in your coolant cap that says:

NEVER ADD WATER!!

Further, engine manufacturers that I am aware of (car engine conversions), do recommend :

When you change your coolant from water or water/antifreeze mix to Evans, or backwards, you MUST thoroughly flush your cooling system!

That’s what I have been told
Carlos

Evans can mix with water, but then you don't have Evans any longer just a plain diluted anti freeze at what ever concentration of the water mix ratio you added. The whole idea behind Evans was to eliminate the water. This for the most part got rid of the water boiling point / boil over issue. Once you put water in Evans and you add more and more water the Boiling point starts to drop. Give or take a few degrees and "generally" speaking a 50/50 mix boils at around 270F and by removing all the water and just keeping the base anti freeze the boiling point goes up to about 370F, but pure anti freeze does not absorb and transfer heat as well as pure water.

I have a small leak in the radiator which I am fixing and I thought it would be a good time to change to antifreeze as my summer CHTs were higher than I like them to be. I understand that using antifreeze could lower them 10 to 20 degrees.

Thanks for the the replies to my question on coolant.

I had temps drop in excess of 50 degrees when changing from Evans to 50/50 glycol-water mix. My EGT dropped even more than that. I am not a fan of the Evans coolant. I know Prestone makes the "Dexcool" antifreeze that states on the jug that it is specifically designed to be used in aluminum systems.

Prestone Dexcool is the only 50/50 Antifreeze I've seen recommended. It's in my 912, however I have not run it yet....Geoff
