Just wanted to start a topic for those of us going this way.

I'm waiting on my plans and am off to CC #13 in January to start my engine assembly.

I've decided to switch over from my 110% 701 to take advantage of factory parts that I'm too busy/lazy/underskilled to build! Laughing

I'm game... the wife gave her nod for a 750 corvair... Assessing my personal skills I can tell that while I will be able to build the engine 'from scratch', building the airframe from scratch is simply not something I should attempt. I admit it sounds very romantic (and cheap) but seriously, I would go bonkers cutting out endless numbers of ribs. I plan to conduct a hybrid build; scratch build a lot of the straight or flat parts and buy a lot of the curvy bits.

That said, I am gathering data about what corvair engine I should be on the prowl for. I have rebuilt a couple of Jaguar engines and was always tuned into serial number ranges. Is it similar with the corvair engine? Should I be looking for a particular serial number range?

Dave,

For $200 you can get a good core engine.
This Ebay engine was in a crash!
You will have to completely rebuilt the engine anyway.
And likely replace most of the expensive parts.
I really don't think it will put you ahead of the game.

Be very careful.

Dave - There are several resources for Corvair information. I'd suggest joining the Corvair list that you can join here: corvaircraft-join(at)mylist.net

There is the "Corvair Authority" William Wynne at www.flycorvair.com

Mark Langford has some interesting stuff and maybe more hours that anyone at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/

Pat Panzera has some good stuff here: http://www.corvaircraft.com/

This list goes on and on.

Scratch building is challenging and fun, although time consuming. You can get a great video here that shows you the in's and out's: http://www.homebuilthelp.com/Scratch.htm

Enjoy!

Dave,
I have 20+ Core engines at my shop.
I would be happy to sell you one.
But shipping can be expensive.
It would be best for you to find one in your area.
If you contact your local CORSA club they will hook you up.
www.corvair.org
They have locals in every state.

if you have any trouble let me know And I will try to help you find one close by.
Also try Craigs list.
