The procedure for checking the oil that is detailed in the operators manual involves hand proping for a few minutes to pump the oil from the engine into the oil tank. This is a pain in the neck and I was wondering if anyone out there knows of an alternate procedure.

The previous owner suggested that I just check the oil after shutting down at the end of the flight. Does that sound reasonable?

What I've always heard is that you should check the oil after a minute or two of having the engine run.

It is much easier on the engine to pre-heat it, if it is below 35 F.

Checking after the flight is okay also, but you then have to check for puddling (on the ground, in the cowl, etc). Personally I've been checking after engine 1-2 minute warmup.

This summer, I am going to modify my cowl so that I won't have to remove it when I check oil. That *my* only complaint.

Ouch. I guess I'm lucky that the builder of this airplane put in a access door over the oil tank. Thanks for the tip. I think I'll switch to checking after warmup.
