Hey Guys,
Since it's a little slow, I'll post some pictures of the last couple of weekends of paint work. We went with acrylic enamel -- wish we'd used urethane, but it's done now. This is in my back yard shop.
We decided to go simple and quick with the cowl pin on this one, and with the screw head painted, it almost disappears, so we're pleased with it. I just looped the end of the pin around, welded it, counter sunk it, and glassed in the recessed area around the nut plate. One thing I did that others may question (feel free) was to open up the ears on the hinge pin so that I can get the pin in and out more easily. To do this, I took the hinge pin before cutting it to length and flatted a place about two inches back from the tapered end, then put the other end in my drill and fed the pin into the hinges as a reamer. Then I cut off the excess flatted end, re tapered it and cut the pin to size -- it works great now. I got tired of trying to figure out which ears were binding, or trying to sand down the pin itself.
After hearing others talk of trying to fill rivet heads, I decided to load up on primer along the rivet lines. I'm using self etch primer on the bare aluminum, then 2K epoxy primer to sand, so I loaded up on both on the rivet lines. After sanding (carefully with a 5" random orbital sander) the rivets all but disappear with final paint (three coats of white). We'll see if they work through eventually after it's in flight, but for now it is really slick.
I need to have 60 degrees to shoot and it's been in the 30's lately, so for the other wing and the fuse, I'll be trying to catch warmer days or wait until Spring.
I'll include one shot of how I suspended the wing -- on the spar end, it's a small block and tackle, on the other it's left over pvc drain pipe on a hook in the ceiling. The wing has enough mass that it doesn't swing when spraying it.
Later, - Lew
