Can anyone who's installed Rod Bowers Ram Air on their IO-540 tell me if they were able to do so with a forward facing sump or a simple elbow on the stock sump to face forward without going to the expense of adding a full cold air induction system? Also do you have a picture of your Ram Air installation with the lower cowl off?

I don't know the answer to your question, but a call to either Rod
himself (at) (559) 972-6291 or Don Rivera (at) Airflow Performance 864 576
4512 should provide you with whether an adapter is available. AFP has
and supplies a wide variety of elbow adapters, and Don will know which
will or won't fit the 540 sump and the AFP FI. They are both great and
easy guys to talk to, and won't BS you by trying to talk over your head.

Here's some pics of my installation:

follow the 'next picture' links there should be about 8 more pictures

Lee, we have the Rod Bower Ram Air installed on a 'standard' IO540, vertical draft induction. There is an elbow available from Airflow Performance that Rod sent us to try, these elbows will not work. They push the front of the intake too far forward, and will not leave enough room for the cowl. We made a fiberglass elbow that attaches to the throttle body in the standard vertical orientation, then makes about a 100 degree turn to meet the ram air intake. Hopefully the pictures attached show it well.

Keep in mind when we did our install it was with Rod's 'old' design, I have no idea what needs to happen for his new design. We also had to shorten the front of the ram air intake to make it work.

Our objective was to not modify the cowl to make the system work, we are using a James Cowl, with the standard induction position, not the cold air induction position.

I like the concept behind the system, Rod was nothing but helpful. I will admit that after putting in dozens of hours making this work I did start to question my sanity. Not flying yet, no proof it was, or was not worth it.
