Rene C

You are not seeing the picture correctly. You only built one RV 10 C so your twenty times probably does not match all the times Dave did his RV10 C then did the next one for a student and so on and so on.

If I told someone that they could take at least 3/16" or more off the fiberglass before needing to worry about finessing then look at all the experience that was missed in developing skills with the power tools used in the process and the all the analytical problem solving which was missed. It might be faster with the class C but all that other stuff has to be worth something...doesn't it?
Fiberglass is not something to fret about C it is an amazing medium to work with.

Unless of course you develop an allergy to the stuff, pollute your lungs with the dust, or don't care about EVERYTHING that was not protected in the workshop/hangar being covered in a two inch layer of crud. My hangar buddies REAAAALY started to lose their sense of humour with the amount of dust and crap that is generated in preparing the glass stuff for paint.

I actually enjoyed working with it - but the consequences of working with it are a different matter ;->

cheers,
Ron

It just seems unfair.......I think I put mine on and off 20 times......but
that is what I get for not going to the class and learning from a pro.

To answer a couple items:

1. To Ron's point, they did the cutting, sanding, etc, to the top outside the shop, with one person holding the top, along with a vacuum hose, while the other did the deed. Picture attached.

2. My comments about the top and roll bar awhile back. I'm cannot be sure if that top is as strong as folks hope it will be, should you go topsy turvy on landing, but it is one hefty piece of work in the "roll bar" area. I know it has been drop tested and satisfied that engineering criteria. Should you go upside down, that top might be the most likely thing to survive. In short, when I get to that stage, I'm building to plans and not doing any mods. I think sometimes I look at fiberglass and cannot believe that it can be that strong. There were two and a half glass birds in Dave's shop. Two Lancair's and one Glastar (thus the half). We got to have a look at both glass and carbon fiber work. Amazing the rigidity with pieces that on their own you wouldn't think would give you that much strength and form. After we did our little projects, I was even more impressed. I've been slamming my Searey 20' ski boat around at 50 mph into some pretty hard water for years and years. Duh. I'm pretty sure it's not made out of aluminum.

3. As far as a video goes. I've asked Dave if he would mind if I put together a compilation of the most important demos and gems to share with those who attended the course, and he indicated that was fine with him. If there was a distribution beyond that, that would have to be up to Dave. It's his material, not mine. I'll put some pictures on the web site and some verbiage, though.

4. I've enjoyed Les Kornkeirny's company now on several occasions, and he can spell my name anyway he wants. Smile
