Nick or Buz, can probably answer this one. I am about to start thinking about a prop, and know Buz has had a few different props on his plane. I am wondering about the ground adjustable or maybe a straight wood prop. There has been many comments about props on the net and was hoping that more info was available. The Warp prop is out after I see Doug back stepping on his comments on performance. Also voids the warrantee. Now that there is enough planes flying I was hoping more info available.
Nick, what is the present recommendation from Arion? I know each plane will be slightly different and which engine one has( solid lifters or not). I feel that a nice cruse prop is the way I would like to go , for the plane will get off the grass fast enough with any prop. What is the lead time on ordering a prop? Tex

Tex,
I can't remember if you are building to light sport standards and whether you have solid lifters or hydraulic.

I am building the normal Lightning, not light sport. No wing tip extensions, and have hydraulis lifters.
thanks for your reply. Tex

Tex,
Assuming you will do gear leg fairings and the Lightning wheel pants, I would recommend either a Sensenich 62FK58 or possibly a 64ZK55. The FK will probably give slightly better takeoff and climb performance and about the same cruise. I am sure Nick will also have some recommendations, but based on what I have seen flying different props on several different Lightnings, I would go with one of the above.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Yeah, what he said.
However, we have experienced a lot of difference between Sensnich props taking off on grass. If you only want to buy one prop and dont plan to do a lot of cross-countries, go flatter rather than higher pitch.
My personal opinion is that trying to achieve the highest top speed is both frustrating and expensive. It virtually guarantees ending up with a prop collection.
I tried to explain that the IVO testing is still in its early stages. I wasn't aware that it would "void the warrantee", but I have trouble understanding what that prop might break inside the engine. It is a very smooth prop. It seems to cool better than the Senny. I do believe it will ultimately offer the best takeoff and the best cruise, but have no reliable data to back it up, so if you are ready to go, I would chose the Senny and be happy.

Thanks Doug and Buz for the info, I still have few months to make up my mind on a prop. I wish we could have a few props around in the group,so we could swap back and forth to find the prop of our liking. Again thanks for the info. Tex

Tex,
I would get a wood prop, just don’t have me sol on anything else yet. We typically use a sensenich 62FK58, that is with leg fairings and wheel pants for good cruise. If you don’t need to go blazing fast than a 62FK 56 is a great climb prop and around the local area type flying.
My though on the ground adjustable is that it does work well and can be matched to the plane, but they seem to be a bit harsher in smoothness, less economical on fuel burn, and slower on the Lightning. But I know you like float planes and if you put your lightning on floats this is what you would want. J
