Need Diagnosis!
Took my YAK 50 for a test flight after replacing the air line from the air compressor to the 'snot' valve and upon landing, while testing my magneto's prior to shutdown as i usually do, noticed the #2 magneto position was cold dead. It had tested good 15 minutes before during run up, never a trouble before. Switch, Points, cap, wires and P Lead all look/check good.
What would make a magneto completely 'die' in such a short time frame with absolutely no warning? Any ideas, or similar experiences? Any diagnosis? What did you do?
Currently looking at getting a replacement mag thinking something inside flew West???
Thanks for any info in advance!

The coil is mostly gone TU. One minute it can be good and the next minute it's gone. The capacitor/condenser is internal to the coil. I believe Jill has replacements. Not cheap. But she does have replacements.

Make sure the gears are still good and that the mag moves properly when you spin the mag. I had one go out where the gears in the mag actually stripped, causing the mag coupling to do it's job and come apart. Failing that, if everything else is good, probably a bad coil.

I recently had a dead mag that happened in much the same way as yours. Checked OK at the end of a flight, then next flight it was dead. If your problem is the same it could be where the contact/stud? goes into the cap. Look to see if there are any burn marks in the coil body around the contact. On mine there was actually some erosion around the stud and it was apparently arcing to ground. At any rate a change of cap fixed it.
Good Luck
Jim
