I have recently completed a 3 year study and comparison of the Shell 22 grease vs a common Moly grease and a common Lithium grease.
Setup (1): I had 45 planes that I kept records on.
Main Gear: Used Shell 22 on one main wheel, Lithium or Moly on the other.
Nose Gear: Alternated between all of them on the nose gear and nose wheel bearings.
When used in the nose strut, the Shell 22 was horrible. It separates and runs out within a year. I have also seen a LOT of corrosion with the Shell 22 in the nose strut and nose wheel bearings. Not so much on the main wheel bearings. Not sure why. The Moly and the Lithium performed extremely well under the same conditions.
Setup (2): I had 27 planes I kept records on
Throttle rod end: When used on the throttle rod end, the shell 22 does not hold up or protect from rust as well as either of the other two greases.
For what it's worth, the Shell 22 grease is total crap. I'm surprised the FAA let them approve it for aircraft.
