Hey guys, a couple of more general questions for ya. It is not time for a rebuild yet on my 582, but maybe by next fall or the following spring, depending on hours I put on.

Looking around for pistons, gaskets and such I came across this. It is an aftermarket kit that is supposed to exceed the OEM specs. The price is realy good, about half what you would pay from CPS or LEAF. Would this be a good way to go, or is it asking for problems?

Second question. The mags/coil packs on the 582. Not knowing much about the ignition system, is it reccomended to replace the magneto and or the coil packs at hourly intervals, like on certified planes? I can't seem to locate the Ducati coils on CPS or LEAF, although I might not be looking for the right thing. Anyone know who sells them?

Anyone have any opinions? Good deal, or stay away?

Stay away from it. I got suckered into it, as did a buddy of mine.

They are single ring pistons from a 583 snowmobile engine. At 3 hrs the rings failed on akflyerbobs. We pulled the engine down and the rings had NO spring left in them. They looked good when they went into the engine. The cylinders were precision honed and the ring end gap was fine. After the break in and a little over an hour in the air, I noticed a loss of power especially at takeoff. I made a quick turn around the airport at less than half the pattern altitude and got her back on the ground. I shut it down and jumped out and gave the prop a spin by hand and I may as well have had a turbine in the nose, there was virtually no compression.

The eBay ad says they have kits for both 582 and 583. Maybe you got the wrong kit? I tried expanding the photo in the eBay ad to see more detail of those pistons and I couldn't be sure, how many ring lands there were.

Are the pistons supposed to be a forging? That might account for some of the reason they are so expensive.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to shoot him an e-mail and see if he can send some closer pictures, and see if they are single ring, or doupble.

I noticed he does have diffrent kits for 582 snomobile, 582, and 582 aircraft. I assume that there is some diffrence, although he could be selling all the same thing, and just changing the price.

I will let you all know what I find out. If these are double ring, made for aircraft 582, they may be a good deal.

Andrew

Did you contact the seller and ask some questions?

I just got a message back from the seller. He refered to them as "aerolites", so I am not sure if that is a brand or what, as I can't seem to find any other info on that brand name. Anyway, he said they make an aircraft version, and a snowmobile version. The aircraft version is a single ring though.

Whay would an aftermarket company make a singel ring version?

Leonard, I am interested in more info. from you. Was this the exact same kit as you got? Same seller? After you tore it back down, was the ring the problem? Maybe the piston is good, but jsut needs a better ring?

At the price of this kit, it is 2 pistons, rings, and a whole gasket set, for about the same price as just 1 piston with rings costs elswhere. Hard to pass up a deal like that, but it is probably too good to be true.

They are SPI pistons. I used them in my snowmachine with good results so I rolled the dice. I dont care what the seller says, such as "I have used them in aircraft for 14 yrs blah blah blah". If you feel like rolling the dice it's your butt and your plane, I just got through with a 2 yr rebuild on mine and I dont feel like rebuilding it again cause I went cheap on the pistons, but it is just my opinion and something I have observed first hand with my butt in the seat doing the test flights for my buddy.

We put stock pistons in the hole and the ring gap was well within specs. The SPI rings were not even strong enough to spring out and hit the cylinder all the way around after a little under 3 hrs on them. They were fine when we first put them in and we did not run the EGTs high or overheat the engine.
