Hey all... I'm still just a lurker here, but I am looking to buy a
Yak in the near future...
I have a question regarding N numbers... If I buy a Yak 52 that is
"pre-moratorium", can I get it registered to me with a new N number
without losing the pre-moratorium status? Anybody ever done this?
Thanks!

You can get ANY airplane registered with the N number of your choice, provided the N number is available. All you have to do is relinquish the existing N number back to the FAA. The major benefit of the premoratorium aircraft was no restrictions on where they could fly. That is also true today as the FAA issued a letter in Sept. of '07 removing the 300/600 mile proficiency areas for all newly issue operating limitations for experimental exhibition aircraft (in our case 300 NM for Group III aircraft) and for aircraft with existing operating limitations with 300/600 miles limitations, upon the request of the owner/operator to remove the 300/600 mile proficiency area with submission of the proper paperwork.
Also please realize the FAA/FSDO has the right to reissue operating limitations as they so choose based on changes they deem necessary for the safe operation of the experimental aircraft.

In my own experience they re-issued the OL even though I kept the same N number. Additionally, I found that the FSDO was not up to speed on the EAA-Warbirds 2 inch N-number waiver program. The EAA makes this real easy for us. If they do come to inspect for OL re-issue they'll be looking at some specific items. If you want to contact me off list I'll tell you what my inspection was like and what theywere big on. Over all it was pretty straight forward.
