My two cents...
Keith, you're exactly right about the strut noise, if it's coming whilst the plane is rocking back, it's the nose gear strut extending. A common sound when taxing the plane at Oshkosh.
We use ADC oil filters on our aircraft and are very pleased with the installation. Check them out at http://www.aviationdevelopment.com/. Not only does it double the interval between oil changes as any oil filter will do, but this also is "smart" and will let you know when it's time to clean the screen....no spin on filter...and has additional add on features of chip detection and low oil pressure warning.

Hi Walt,
Now you tell me!! Actually it was the best thing that could have happened.
Hey thanks for the info on the the struts. I think the clunk comes when the planes
rocks back on the tail during taxing over extending the strut, but I could
be wrong. You are right about the manuals. I have a hodgepodge of translated
stuff on pdf files. Perhaps Doug has a nice document in English.

You will have to accept my 2 RMB worth as I'm still in China. (6.7 RMB
to the dollar today, we are getting killed here!)
The nose gear noise (while taxiing) can range from snapping to
clanking to outright banging depending on the condition and adjustment
of your nose gear. You are correct, it can come from the nose gear
oleo extending and hitting the stops, but I would think that if this
is a constant situation you might check the pressure as this is
really not normal if the pressure is correct, unless the taxiway is
real rough.
However, if the length of the actuator ram is incorrect it can cause
the nose gear to actually pop in and out of "over center" causing a
snapping/clunking noise, and a dangerous condition should you run up
against something solid enough to fold up the nose gear. This rarely
happens when taxiing on a hard surface, but nose gears have been known
to fold when pushing the aircraft up a incline backwards with a tug,
which seems to indicate that pressure aft can cause the nose gear to
fold. Check your manual for proper over center specs. and adjustment
procedures. Also if the bearing in the upper end lug of the nose
gear actuator is loose, this can cause a noise also. We have found
many of these end lugs which were so soft that the hole for the
bearing had stretched to a egg shape allowing the bearing to slop up
and down every time the nose gear rolled over a seam in the taxi way.
We have a 4140 steel end lug to solve this problem. Last, there are
two large bronze bushings in the top of the nose gear, if these are
badly worn they will cause both difficulty in steering and a clunking
noise when taxiing.
Best from Nanchang, They are playing Jingle Bells in the lobby of the
hotel, photo's of Chinese Santa's all over the place......very
strange, Buddhists celebrating Christmas, how does that work?
Always Yakin,
Doug
