Would anyone have any ideas on the following hand rivet puller problems. About every 5th or so A5 rivet has a sharp stem protrusion a mm or so and some are breaking off with 10 mm or so protruding with the same sharp angle. I have disassembled and lightly lubricated and it still happens. A4 rivets pull ok. Thanks Do not archive

Harvey,
I was having similar problems with my almost new hand riveter, but the rivet stems broke off higher...10-15mm. It happens about once every 10 rivets.
Tonight, the darned thing broke, and won't pull any rivets. I will replace the jaws if I can locate the spares in my cluttered shop.
My new pneumatic riveter also breaks off the occasional A5, but never has a problem with A4's. That also happens about once every 8-10 rivets.
I asked Zenith, and they said they have not been having reports of problems. So I just popped the stems off with a pliers, and continued to build.
I'd be curious to see if they have a bad batch of rivets.
Merry Christmas!

I believe you could be holding it an an angle or not holding it down
firm. Here's a little suggestion I use and it helps keep the riveter
head from bouncing off and marking your aluminum and popping the stem
too early. The reason I am mentioning this is because sometimes when
you put pressure hard down on the head, it will bounce when it pops, you
will get a nice little dent next to your rivet. What happens is that you
end up holding your riveter up or pulling away too fast and it pops the
stem off without tightening the rivet. I hope that makes sense. Anyway
get a piece of soft leather and cut a small hole in it to surround the
rivet. When it bounces, it will bounce on the leather. Keep downward
pressure until it pops. Take care, Larry

mmmmm, it seems you need to use the right pressure from your compressor.
Read the manual of your riveter and youŽll find the supposed PSI to work
without problems.
bye.

Is it possible that the jaws on your puller are scoring the stem deeply
enough that the stem is pulling apart where the jaws grab it. Do the ends
of the stems look like they have been scored on each side and then broken or
stretched to failure in the remaining cross sectional area?

Will try to make sure it is square and tight to rivet and surface. The rivet gun is the one zenith sells and only has a 1000 or so A4s pulled and very few A5s. No air pressure problems as I have a compressor but no pneumatic rivet gun. Thanks for replies.

Harvey, Another suggestion is to not to use too much air pressure, so that it won't bounce.
