Just finished the nose wheel pant and fairing - an ugly task with lots of trimming and fitting and FG dust everywhere. Now I need to start the main gear fairings and wheel pants. It would seem easier to do it now, before the wings are on and the engine is mounted.
Question:
Vans directions say to jack the plane up so that the wheels simulate their position in flight. Right now with the tail supported and the nose wheel kissing the surface, I figure that the plane is about 500-600 lbs total with no more than 200-250 lbs on each wheel. Has anyone fitted their main fairings and wheel pants in this state without jacking the plane up? With only 1/3 of the loaded weight on the gear now will it make that much difference. The "toe in" of the wheels is quite evident....... curious on any feedback.

Mike,
I had a wooden box-like cradle that I used to support the main fuselage
while I worked on it that I used along with a floor jack to raise the
fuselage off of the floor. This along with a telescoping tail stand
allowed me to set the tail hight then jack the front up until I had the
proper angle. Once in place I took two pieces of 1"x 2" and screwed them
to the outboard sides of the cradle. I kept the jack under the cradle as
a safety precaution. This gave me a stable tripod and all the room
needed to snap the line on the floor, make measurements to the wheel
pants and enough room to work around the main gear legs safely.
Hope this helps.
Dave
