Has anyone done anything to minimize the drag caused by the opening in the cabin top at the hinge locations. 



I was thinking about making a 4 kevlar sheets that would lay flat in the slipstream but be able to flex up when the doors are open C but the problem I see is that the metal hinge in a few locations is at the same level as the cabin top and the sheet would not be able to be recessed. I have fared those location in and a few spots the metal was exposed by the sanding.

probably no surprise but Deems did do something.  

 went through these xacts questions.

 When I asked Deems this is part of what he  sent.

 as far as the recessed:

 I used a Dremel, with a router bit and their plastic mini router fence.  

I set it for about 1/16" depth so that the fiberglass covers would sit  

below the airstream (hopefully).

Deems made some glass covers and Robin Marks made aluminum...I went with the aluminum ones...if you checkout Deems or Robins site you can see both examples

I did not do anything over the top of the hinges, but I did clean up the gap between the edge of the hinges and the recess in the cabin top. After the hinges were shimmed to final position I removed them and wrapped each hinge with 3 layers of duct tape on the edges only. Also covered the top and bottom of each hinge with release tape. After reinstallation, the gap was filled with flox, leaving a gap of about 0.020" between hinge edge and top. It also cleaned up the irregular radius of the original cabin edge.

Robin C Deems and Pascal C



You guys are doing some awesome work. Awesome! Oh C to have the time C why can't I win the lottery. 

I think you are all addressing the issue C but what I am looking at is the hinge gap that is still there on the fifth and six picture up from the bottom on Robin's email. I am trying to close off the cut out area in his aluminum cover.

I have opted to flox in the area around the hinge on the cabin top C then covered the entire thing over. I have done the same thing on the top of the door. I have effectively lost my ability to remove the doors without uncovering the screw heads. Yes C i did think this all through C but being the glider guy C thinking smooth I had to do it. 

This should make for some interesting painting of the exterior with the doors opened up and trash bagged and then shooting the interior rim. Anyway C I couldn't bare taking those dam doors off one more time! 

In any case C what I am considering is doing a two ply kevlar sheet with a washer in the middle C so that a flat head screw can secure the sheet forward of the gap. The washer will be countersunk. This will be recessed so it is flush with the cabin top and the slipstream should keep it laying flat. The trick is making it so that it gets out of the way when the door opens C but goes back to its sleeping position and is durable with no memory. I also don't want it flapping up there like a playing card on a kids bicycle spokes. Think of the bicycle going two hundred miles an hour. If there is not good laminar flow this is a strong possibility. Maybe test it with the air compressor.

I guess I can make a few while I am at it for correct length and replacement issues. I dying to break out my vacuum pump do the lay up on my machine shop granite table.

            Thanks for the compliments. I don’t know about Pascal but Deems & I feel we not only have not won the lottery but have been the ones responsible for the payouts the last few months. As far as removing the doors after your mod not to worry the doors often remove themselves… in flight.

Nice my name is mentioned but I was showing you Deems  work, not mine. All I have done is make two panels to cover the doors where the  hinges are. I haven't gotten to the canopy yet.
