I have a question for all you 701 Historian and techies. Why did Chris go with a short 10-gal tank and install a “Wing Tank Channel” (7V11-1K). Rather than a 12-gal Tank that would go all the way to the rear Spar? I was just looking at Stefan and Ken Carpenter 750 wing assembly photos and the short tank design is carried through there also. Everything is done for a reason and I was just curious if any one really knows or asked the factory.

Could it be the additional rearward shift in CG as you rotate and the fuel sloshes to the rear of the tank? I was going to make my tanks deeper but decided against this due to the possible issue (it was just a theory on my part with not analysis or running this by anyone else).

That is a good question, I am actually planning on making mine a little larger.

Hi Curt,
The only response I have is I know of a couple of people that have built the fill tank and have not experienced a CG issue. It only adds about two gallons per wing at 6LB a gallon for a total of 24lbs. It's location is right at the transition from the pilot to the baggage area. I would think a heavy pilot would be about the same.

I was just looking at a drawing of the ribs, at first glance it looks as though the tank ends about where the bottom of the ribs turn up? So maybe it is just to avoid a more complicated tank form/design? I'll have to at it better when I get home.

I have the CZAW tanks which have a capacity of approx. 42.5 Litres each.
Looking at my plans, this version does not have a 7V11-2K and the tank reaches 7V6-2 instead. The differences for the tank fold plans, top of page down, as follows.
ZAC 10 gal 502 100 488 200 5 dl=1295 W=565
CZAW 665 48 630 199 5 dl=1547 W=565
FWIW I do notice a pitch up effect at T/O although have not correlated that with the amount of fuel carried. I assumed it was more to do with the centre of lift being different to the C of G on the wheels or the centre of lift changing with the angle of attack of the wing - where the slats might alter pressure distribution over the top wing surface?

fuel outlet for the CZAW tanks is located in the same corner as the ZAC tanks that is lower rear corner of the inboard tank side panel. Effectively it moved rearward due to the longer tank.

I was looking at my picks of wing stiffeners and realized that I had this pic, it sounds like what your describing for a 42.5 L or 11.2gal tank?

Yes Kevin, similar although your pic shows 2 outlets and a curved upper panel probably more capacity and advantage for fuel flow when in sustained nose down ops.

Hi Kevin and Ralph,
The picture you posted Kevin is exactly what I want to build. I just can’t see wasting the area between the 10-gal Zenith tank and the rear spar. I also like the duel fuel outlets. Just like piper Pacer, Tripacers and Cubs.
