Hey all,
I had one turtle deck tab break the other day. The tab on the fuselage next to the flaperon bearing support. Before I do a hatchet job does anyone have a good way to fix this problem? Can I just remove the fabric around the area, make a new tab, weld, then put new fabric on the opening to close it up? I hope I don't have to recover the whole fuselage. If I can do the smaller fabric job, I could use the opportunity to change the flaperon bearing mount, it's looks like the original design. Any help would be appreciated.

What is it covered with? Poly fiber and poly tone finish you can just cut out the area you need, or better yet, hit it with an acetone soaked rag and it will take it down to bare fabric. Hold the rag on it and it will soften the glue and you can peel it back real easy. Make your repair and glue back down. If you do need to cut the fabric, you just have to put a patch back on that overlaps the good fabric by 2". It is a very simple repair that could be done in an afternoon.
If it has aerothane, it is a bit harder to take the old finish off, but the poly fiber manual tells in good detail how to do the repair. If you dont have the book, I get home Wednesday and can scan in the section you need and shoot it to you.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> You might consider doing away with the turtle deck and install a single piece of aluminum in its place. That would eliminate the need to cut up your fabric.

Leonard, Jeff & Dee,

Thanks for the reply. I don't know for sure what it's covered with, but I did get cans of Randolph's Butyrate adhesive and nitrate (non-tautening). I'm just guessing it's some type of ceconite. I'll give the acetone method a try on a small spot. Stan Tews had suggested once I could make new bearing material out of some two part epoxy type steel stuff. But I'm not sure how I'd attach it to the airframe. I know the current style I have doesn't look very good. By the way, my flaperons drag lightly on the top of the fabric between the rear turtle deck attach points are and the forward opening were model IV's have a baggage area.
Dee, I'm not sure how to visualize your suggestion of putting sheet aluminum instead of the turtle deck, can you expand that for me?
Well, back to see what I can do.
Thanks, I'll check back in a little while.
Jack

For what it is, I would go one of two, or probably both of the following ways:

1. Clean the base metal up with a wire wheel on a dremel and use structural adhesive to re-attach the broken tab.
2. Make a plate that slips behind the tab your camloc fastener is anchored to, drill out the back rivet on the camlock and rivet the new plate in place to "sandwich" the bearing.

I would not mess with the covering.
