Lynn, just saw your article from the Sport Pilot magazine from the EAA website and noticed your one piece tuttle deck and skylight. Was wondering how you attahed your skylight? Looks like camlocks or screw rivets or something along those lines. Were your afraid of cracking easily and did it this way so it could easily be replaced? Hi Leon-
The LP Aeroplastics turtledeck window is attached to the modified
Kitfox framework with 6-32 nuts and bolts. I took the folding feature
out when I installed the one-piece acrylic window. It attaches to the
fuselage with camlocks as shown in the building manual. The one-piece
windshield/skylight is held in place with 10-32's into two-lug anchor
nuts, which I riveted to the butt rib on the sides and to the rear
flange "thingy". The black material under the edge of the skylight
is a foam tape that I got from LP Aeroplastics.
I wasn't afraid if it cracking, but all the horror stories that I
heard about them doin that made me attach it with screws. I wouldn't
use rivets, as you have no control over the amount of tension that
you need to apply when securing the windshield/skylight or the
turtledeck for that matter. LP A recommends that machine screws be
used, and nylock nuts, so that they can be tightened just so that the
screw can still be turned...it needs to be able to move with
temperature changes. And also they say to drill the holes 30%
oversize to allow for movement. Following their instructions has
allowed me no cracks in over two years of flying, so they must know
of which they speak. : )
Rumors of my working in underwear has been greatly
exaggerated...those are shorts....and if you live in Texas and wear
long pants, you must have Air Conditioning. : ) What, no comments on
my beer gut? (I was trying to suck it in)
