G'Day All,

Can some of you guys who have a good smoke system on a 52 and 18T please help sort a few problems out.

What is the best position on the exhausts to install the nozzles for max effect?
i.e. How far from the end (outlet) of the exhaust?

I would imagine that 2 nozzles, one on each pipe, would create a better smoke pattern.

In my experience the best place is as high as possible up the final tail-pipe.
A lot is said about the type of nozzle,but if it goes in as a spray,that is fine.
For decent smoke you need about 4/5 litres a minute-ie a bit more than a US gal.
You need a good high presure pump-if you are not too concerned about weight,the best are probably the Jabsco pumps,originally designed for boat bilge-pumps.They are cheap and reliable.If concerned by weight use automotive fuel-injection pumps-but these are 12 volts.
Finally you need a solenoid valve in the circuit to shut the flow,and prevent the oil leaking through when not needed.

Richard,
Which pump model do you recommend from Jabsco. The Junior Puppy has a flow rate of about 3.4 gallons per minute, would that be too much?

The figure of 3.4 galls/min is with unimpeded flow.You do need a form of jet,so the oil is easily vapourised in the exhaust and constricting at the jet is the way to keep down to the figure of 4/5 litres/min.
What you do not want is a low powered pump which will deliver that same volume,but unrestricted,so it just dribbles into the exhaust.So you need the 3+ galls/min capacity which is then throttled back as it pushes a jet of oil into the exhaust.

FWIW, I tried numerous home-made nozzles that just didn't do a good job and was amazed at how much better a nozzle from SmokingAirplanes.com worked. I don't use their whole system, just the injector nozzle they sell.

Now I have great smoke for our formation acro show using just one nozzle at a flow rate of .75 gal/min (3 litres/min). The other wingman in our show has two nozzles (non-Smoking Airplanes, I think) and you cannot tell the difference in smoke as we fly together.

Put the single nozzle on the left side exhaust (#4 cylinder side) and you will get LOTS less smoke in the cockpit during aerobatics than with a right side nozzle. With any AOA on the Yak the right side smoke goes over the wing while the left side flows more under the wing. I assume due to propwash. However, at slow speeds (hammerheads, spins, snaprolls, etc) you'll still get smoke over the left wing.

Problem was some smoke in the cabin during certain figures ...
so exhaust extensions need to be fitted.

Why not just order a whole kit from smoking airplanes? All there, simple to install and it works.
