I'll bet you were using the Kitfox analogue tach. The pulses coming up the
grey wire are probably coming at too high a voltage on one side so all the
pulses are not counted. When you turn off the stronger side of the split
coil the voltage on the pulses drops to a point where more of the pulses get
counted and the tach then magically increases. This may be fixed by
installing a resistor in series with the tach on the grey lead. You can try
first with a decade box to get the correct resistance.
Having a tach that doesn't read correctly all the time is not good... You
may be seriously over revving your engine on takeoff or just as bad, trying
to take off without full power being developed. Those Westach devices are
notorious for their bad rep as just about the poorest tach available.
I'd recommend getting a digital tachometer like the TinyTach but be sure to
get the one specifically made for two cylinder two stroke engines. The
instructions which come with the digital tach will tell you to choose any
spark plug lead and wrap the impulse line around it a specific number of
times. I recommend wrapping the wire around both plug leads going to any
cylinder that way pulses are read from both sides of the magneto and your
digital tach won't turn off when you check one or the other mags.
I left my Westach in the panel and I use it not to identify a specific
engine rpm but to follow a trend in rpm... It's easier to notice a hand
wavering up and down than trying to follow the numbers on a digital tach.

Thanks for the info Noel. Any clue why this might have cropped up all of the sudden. It was not a problem in the past.
I was thinking of getting a TinyTach anyway, now is a good time for the upgrade.

A tinyTac would be a good investment. I had one on my Kitfox. You will find C however C that you will still need the analogue tac for your mag check.

Hmm.... Does the Tinytach hook up to plug wires from both cylinders, or just one? If it goes to both, it seems like the mag check would still work.
Probably best if I track down the problem, then get the TinyTach as a backup then.

TinyTac connects to one wire. The issue I believe s a digital vs analogue one. I always used the Rotax tac for mag check and the tiny tac for flight. My mag check always showing 50 rpm drop on one and 125 rpm on the other. Hard to see this on the tinytac

The reason has probably been mentioned here by others. A faulty ground is
the biggest cause of problems in Aviation electrical systems. You should
look for not only loose grounds but also any dirty or even slightly corroded
connections. In your case because the problem isn't erratic it's probably a
bit of corrosion under a nut or bolt. I wouldn't worry about a sudden
stoppage. BTW the bad connection can actually be inside the magneto ring.

Only if you don’t wrap both wires going to either cylinder. Mine showed an accurate almost consistent drop on both mags. Be careful to only make the number of wraps recommended by TinyTach around the wires. Too many turns is just as bad as to few.

The pickup lead from the TinyTach is a shielded wire similar to a piece of
coax. There is a tail sticking out of it, about 8 inches of stiff insulated
wire. You simply wrap that tail the prescribed number of turns (i forger
but it's in the instructions)around the plug wires. There is no physical
hook up, no actual connection. After wrapping my wires I then covered the
installation with a special tape that melts into itself, just to keep things
clean. I think TinyTach recommends not cutting the pickup wire.
