I have a Blackwell system in my CJ.  It is a custom system with 7 gallon

capacity and works well.  I like it.  However, it is expensive (about

$2500 installed when I did it in 2005).  Along comes Smoking Airplanes. 

After talking with Blitz Fox I decided to install one of their systems in

the Yak-50 as I needed a system quick for an upcoming airshow.  It is

relatively in expensive ($1500 installed), high quality, EVERYTHING you

need is provided, good installation instructions, John the owner is a

great guy and will help any way he can, and the whole system can be

installed in a day.  I now put them in all our customers airplanes.  I do

not get anything out of this endorsement other than knowing that I'm

recommending what I feel to be the best bang for the buck out there.  If

you want higher capacity and a schmancy system, Blackwell's is the way to

go in a CJ.  More dense smoke you will not find.



As for the nozzle placement, obviously many have experimented with

placement.  I second Richard's placement of highest in the last

stack...near cyls 3/4 and/or 6/7.  This way you avoid residue out the

joints and pressure build up inside the exhaust.



According to Blackwell, pressure seems to be an important issue in getting

good, dense smoke.  Higher pressure yields a greater atomization of the

oil and a more complete burn.  Again, Blackwell's system consistently

produces the densest smoke I've seen and  he's now using a 90 psi pump, I

believe.



I've attached a few pics. The first one is my CJ with Blackwell's system

(dual injectors) and the other one is a formation shot.  The Yak-50 (still

for sale) is in the middle.  Blackwell system on the right, and another

system on the left.

I just had a Smoking Airplanes system installed. Works great!



The only issue we have right now is smoke getting into the cockpit.

We've sealed up the holes in the wheel wells with little effect. Most of

the smoke seems to enter the rear pit. What other problem areas we

should look at?

Come on, Kurt. Be a man. Suck it up quite literally:)  Sad to say our  CJs leak air like a sieve. Negative pressure inside the cockpit. Most of it is  probably coming in around the bottom of the aft canopy. ...Blitz

Doug Sapp posted a nice piece on this recently.  Craig Payne has done extensive work in this area.  The *easiest* fixes are extensions on the exhaust and louvered panels.  It's definitely a problem that should not be ignored.



Speaking of which, we have recently developed a SS slip joint system including said extensions working with Aircraft Exhaust Systems, as well as a dual heat muff system for the M14P....pretty slick.  Dual heat muffs allow independent operation and distribution of heat in the individual cockpits.

Remember... if you are choking on smoke, you are also sucking in carbon-monoxide all the time just as well.  Doc Kemp has a ton to say regarding this, and it is worth listening to.  Carbon-monoxide poisoning is insidious and can really do a number on judgment and reaction time.

Actually, louvered panels are easy and inexpensive.  And it's not only your GIB, but you as well.  And like Mark says...all the smoke is doing is coloring what is there ALL THE TIME!

Doubtless, the elegant modifications available from Worldwide Warbirds will soon include a rear cockpit mounted  cappuccino machine not unlike the ones in Craig Ekberg's and Ron Lee's CJs.  ...Blitz
