|
|
I'm planning to use 68" 3-Blade Warp Drive prop for my 601XL, powered by the Stratus Subaru EA-81. I'm considering to pay a little extra for the tapered tips as I understand they will have better cruise efficiency. But I wonder what adverse effect to expect during take-off thrust etc. Does it makes sense to taper then?
If anybody has experience with this, and also suggestions for best blade pitch for my configuration, please let me know. I'm sure this has been discussed many times but I'm still learning how to search posts accurately (sorry).
Thanks in advance!! Kevin T.

I have the same setup as you, the prop is pitched to get just shy of
red line in straight and level flight. I don't recall what the pitch
is in degrees. At a take off weight of around 1200 pounds on a
standard day at 700 feet MSL, I get close to 1000 feet per minute
initial climb at about 65 mph. Top speed with wheel pants is around
125 mph CAS.

Hey Bryan,
That's very helpful, Thanks!
Are you using the tapered prop tips?

Hi Kevin,
I've a 70-inch Warp Drive and a Stratus Subaru EA 81 and now use a
17-degree pitch. In the beginning, I flew with a 15-inch pitch and
worked it up to the best
cruise efficiency in three changes. Probably best to begin with a
15-1/2-degree which will give you a huge climb and modest but adequate
cruise to begin with.
I'm really keen on the Stratus and the Warp Drive with tapered blades.
Really smooth!
My site journal has a good deal of information on the Stratus, jetting,
EGTs and test flying the aircraft. Do check out the engine page and the
electrical page
as they also convey things you might find interesting.
Best regards,
Larry McFarland 601HDS at www.macsmachine.com

Hi Larry!
How's the flyin? I purchased one of your radiator intakes and louver sets etc a while back (Thanks again!). Spring '09 I'll be wrapping things up and out on the runway (OK ... taxiway).
Thanks a bunch for the info on the prop angles, sound like a very logical sequence to try out.
