So as not to go off topic in the Photo Thread:

I'd like to know more about the cabin heat systems that are being installed on your planes and how well they really work.

AKFlyer is using an exhaust muff for heat (quite successfully it seems). I'm curious, does this motor (582) not put off enough (consistent?) heat into the coolant for a "heater-core" type of automotive system?

Is anyone using a heater-core hooked to the coolant in your 582 or 912? I thought that there were some done like this with the 912 motors.

I'm leaning more and more toward the 'Fox over the others I have been looking at for a 1st experimental. But I would like to do some winter flying in relative comfort, which makes cabin heat mandatory.

(My budget is telling me I will be looking for a III or IV, probably with a 582 to start with. Wink )

The standard cabin heat for the 912 series is a heater core with two big CPU fans on top. This is how mine is done and it works very well. I have a coolant shut-off valve on it so I can turn it off in the summer and not have the hot coolant running through the core. Here is a pic of the setup as installed per factory instructions. Not the best angle but you'll get the idea.

My brothers KF II has the stock heater core and PC fan in it. It will get the temps 15-20 deg above ambient on a good day. The heat muff gives alot better heat, and is lighter. Mine had big heater core in it with dual fans when I bought it, but the dang thing was over 5 pounds. I under a pound in my new heat system with better heating.

My Kitfox III with 912 has the stock heater core and computer fan and I
can't leave it on or I'll roast. But I live in Hell Paso so it's rarely
cold.
