This sort of mail normally gets sent before a project gets started but...

It looks like we have to move out of our current rental. Finding a house with a garage has been a pain.

We found a place we like, but the garage was measured at only 188"x125".

Has anyone worked on a 701 this late in the project with that small a space?

I even used SketchUp to try to visualize the space...

Any feedback would be helpful.

if you are buying , and have room , you can do as i did for a shop , talked to one of the companys that put up those carports you see everywhere. told them what i needed and they priced it ,,great price. as i am in the construction trade, could not have done it myself any cheaper. poured a slab and they put it up in 6-1/2 hours. it is a 15'x30' x 9' tall closed eaves with a 3' walk in door and a 9'wide7'tall roll up garage door if you need a picture email me and i'll send ya some.

Hey John, sorry to hear about your impending move. To answer your question, you could probably do your build in that small of a space but I would think that you will find it very frustrating. It doesn't leave a lot of room and you will be constantly tripping over your work. I'm in a 20'x30' garage and I'm still tripping over myself sometimes.

Maybe your space would work better if you could find off site storage for some af your completed components. Another suggestion is to move the whole project offsite. You might be able to find some workspace at another location resonably priced. I know that this adds significantly to the price of the project but you appear to be pretty far along on your blog so the rental would not likely be for very long. Things to think about at least.

Best of luck with you build and your move.

Ron:

I am facing the same problem about a garage/hangar. Modifying a current stand alone garage on my property would be over $5 grand. I would appreciate your emailing me a picture of your solution to the hangar problem.

I have my 801 rudder and stab/elevator kit on a shelf hanging less than 1ft
down from the ceiling over a workbench. Similar shelves will store many of
my parts as the build progresses. Anything you can store in another part of
the house will help, but make a list so you can look up where you put
things. Don't ask me why I recommend this. :^)

Is there enough vertical space to hang the wings from the ceiling?

Store the tail under the bed.

601’s have been built in shipping containers and there is/was a 701 builder on the list working in a tent at 6000 ft in Colorado.

Of course real builders build in their living rooms and one used his shiny new Jabiru 3300 as a glass-topped coffee table.

HI John,
I am building out of a Cover-It shelter (12'x30'). I do have a separate place to keep other objects as I build them, but I have designed a way to hang the wings on the ceiling-rafters after I have built them.

just browse through the pictures and find the shelter, Craig was talking about.

http://picasaweb.google.com/ch701builder/SN4765#

I have also seen a person build a 601 is a smaller "tent" than mine.

If there is a will, there is a way!!

Good luck, and may you find the best solution. It does get frustrating stumbling over everything, but do what you can, and hang in there.

I was building in a 14' x 24' garage for awhile and got along pretty well. Built all the airfoils including the wings in there, including storage of everything except the first wing, which got moved into the house. You can get pretty creative with shelf space and storing stuff above the rafters, hoisted under the ceiling, etc. Don't let tight quarters stop you from building.

A friend is willing to let me store my wings in their garage, which will make things easier in the new place. The trick will be getting the engine on.
