Jim,
We'll see how it goes. I know how to make like a very basic dial instrument work, but I think that the EFIS is very doable. I do think it will be much harder than modeling the aircraft. I want my main emphasis to be on making the aircraft realistic looking and realistic flight qualities. Secondarily I want to start with the GRT EFIS and try to make it fairly realistic. I believe that Grand Rapids essentially has a simulator on their website for the avionics. It can help me get through that one. I also want to make 3 versions of the aircraft. One being the original wing, one with the long wing, and one being the long wing sport version. It's been a while since I have flown a Lightning, and during that time the plane has advanced signifigantly in many areas. I flew a less stable and different feeling aircraft. I'll likely have to get a second look to discuss if I've got an accurate model. I bet that Nick will volunteer to try it out. Hey Buz, you wanna fly down here and check it out after I finish? It's also important to note that this will be a fairly long term project. I would like to get the 3 versions of the plane and a cockpit done within a year timeframe. I'll probably do a basic 6 pack cockpit to start with and move on to a glass cockpit. The great thing is that Xplane offers free upgrades to new versions as long as you keep them up to date and it would appear to be very little rework if I got 8/10s through the project and upgraded to a new version.
In the end I also want to create a sort of "fan film" if you will which can be used as a promo for the Lightning. I had originally planned to do this in 4 different Lightnings in real life film. It is very difficult to capture film in a real airplane though. I also ended up moving fairly unexpectedly and don't have access to Lightnings on a daily basis anymore.
I welcome any comments though. We'll see if I can accomodate some of them. I might eventually offer the model for like a $10 fee or something just to help cover my time, but we'll see. I think Xplane runs about $40 and has photo realistic scenery. Thanks for your interest. Brian W.

When you build the EFIS, we can coordinate together and I could build the MGL equivalent.

I am working on modeling the Lightning in Xplane 9. This will give us a much more realistic flight model. Hopefully at some point I'll get both a model of the Lightning and the often used GRT EFIS modeled to allow some basic transition training, or a sense of building excitement while you build. Brian W.

If you dig just a bit deeper from the YouTube video you can see the same landing done by a 737! IT just happens to be in Flight Sim though.
BTW has any modeled the Lightning For Flight Sim X?
