Lately I have been experiencing erratic oil pressure in my 912. Upon startup I get instant oil pressure as normal. After warm up and takeoff I fly for awhile and sometimes my oil pressure dips down to 20 briefly and goes back up to 40. This may happen several times but usually not when the engine is good and hot say 200f degrees. I'm using 20W50 Honda oil. I know that's a bit thick for winter but it averages 60f degrees around here. Any ideas?

I had experienced this a few times in a KF 4 with 912ul that I purchased this past summer. Somewhere on this site I read the obvious to double check all electric connections especially the "grounds" and when doing this I noticed a "ground wire" that appeared to be attached at a point where there was paint and possibly not making a good consistent contact. I sanded off the paint to ensure I would have good metal to metal contact and I have not had the problem since (>40hrs). I can't be sure that was the problem, but again I've not experienced it since. I also believe I read that it is normal for the electronic gauge to show a little higher pressure at lower rpm's than at higher rpms (cruise) and I have noticed this as well. I have a Westberg Quad setup model 3AQ4-41mm. I'm no expert, but maybe this will help, Paul Perry KF IV 912UL

Hi Pete,

Probably one of two things. It is either an oil pressure sender (not real likely) starting to go or my first choice is a partial or intermittent ground.

Pete,
I too have had that problem with my oil pressure indication moving up and down. It was reading about 45 in cruise then would drop, etc. I have the Westach quad gauge. I ordered a new sending unit. I then checked the reading on the old sending unit by putting air pressure to it. I checked this reading with the reading from a known Triumph TR3 pressure gauge which was brand new and had been checked with several other gauges so I knew it was spot on as far as pressure accuracy. The old Westburg sending unit was reading about 15 lbs too low. The new one agreed with my TR3 gauge.I replaced the sending unit and now I am having an accurate reading (at least I think)
Every now and then I will get movement in the needle as you describe but generally it is very steady now. If yours is a Westburg provided unit they have had a dubious history according to some of our members.I think I would check the grounding or the sending unit first. When I went to Rotax school at Lockwood,Dean brought up the grounding problem with the sending unit right away. It is very common (like breaks in the electrical wiring)

PS: By the way Pete,It's been nice to not have to put a block of ice on the engine to keep the engine cool for start. But that time of year is coming !

I was having the same trouble on my Eurofox when it was just 6 months old. One of the connections had already started to corrode. A little sandpaper and it has worked fine ever since then.
