Since I have always been unhappy with the output of my landing lights and their large appetite for power, I was happy to find some LED lights that looked very promising. The lights from J.C. Whitney use about .5 amps and their output is MUCH better than the old halogen ones. Every thing is great until I try to transmit and then there is a huge amount of interference.
Any suggestions?

are you sure your lights are LED, in theory LED should offer nil EM interference. Maybe HID???

LED's use a much lower voltage than 12 volts. If I were to build a
powerfull LED system, I would use a switching power supply to avoid
converting to much voltage into heat. Switching power supplies are
notorious for their ability to generate EM interference.

I'm sure that I saw something in a magazine a little while ago about LED
strobes. Has anyone had any direct experience of these? Can they be as
bright as a normal strobe?
Thanks
Rick

I made my own LED strobes. I modified a circuit for flashing lighthouse to
get the desired pulses and duration
basically its a 555 timer running a decade step counter to give you ten
possible "ON" positions for the strobes
then tapped off that on say pin 1 and 3 which gives you a nice quick double
pulse and and about 4 seconds off
time. this can be adjusted by the resistor on the 555 timer. This the drives
the LED strobe head which consists
of a 3x3 array of 280,000 mcd leds which makes it about the same size as
typical strobe, but you could make
it any shape you want just by moving the LED's around. The LED's are running
on 12v but they are set up in series. Its took a little bit of fiddling but
after 2 test runs I got the resistance correct and they ran for 2 months
on a car battery before the battery went flat. As for brightness, I would
say they are equally as bright as a
comercial strobe unit. given the slight overdiving of the leds they should
be around 3000 candle power per pulse.
they are easily visible in full sun enough to not be desirable to look at.

Craig,
J.C. Whitney advertised them as LED lights; however, that doesn't mean a whole lot. How do you tell the difference?

LED high intensity elements are often pulsed to achieve higher
output within thermal constraints hence RFI

The difference is that a HID light (typcally of 35watts) would drain about 3 amps, not 0.5amp, and burn-off your retinas!.

Hi ChickI took a look at JC Whitneys LEDs http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ProductBrowse?storeId=10101&Pr=p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2017635&productId 17635&catalogId=10101 They look like the same Fog driving LEDs that Pep Boys sells. Pep Boys sell them for 49.99 for pack of two.I purchesed both the round and rectangle LEDs to fool with and a Kitfox builder wanted the one that looked more suitable, so I am going to return the round and send him the rectangle.I checked the rectangle one tonight and sure enough it makes a lot of noise in a handheld vertex VXA-700. What is making the noise is the regulator that drops battery voltage down to LED voltage. The package I have has a button you can push and run one LED off two button batteries that are supplied in package and radio is dead silent. Anyway you need to find a cleaner way to supply voltage to the LEDs, don't use supplied regulators or clean them up.I will put up a few pics in gallery in near future with.Ron Parigoris
[b]
