I should have mentioned the way email addresses are stolen.
My friend got a legitimate looking request that he change his password. Since it seemed legit, he complied. the scammers thus got his password (they already knew his address), changed his password for real and sent the letter almost identical to the one we have just received. He could no longer access his email accounts and got very little help from the provider.
So, be advised all on this list. Dont change your passwords in response to an email requesting that you do so. If you are not sure, delete the message andchange passwords on your initiative, not theirs. Do it as a separate deal.
