Hi Pat-
Mine are about 600 sq inches each. I measured a Cub that turned out
to be 768 sq in for the pair, and another pair for a
Cub...Federals...that measured 1008 sq in for the pair. So mine are a
bit oversize, but work very well in 12-14" of snow. Narrow skis seem
to work better in hard snow, and wider are better for lighter snow,
it seems.

Hey Lynn and Pat this link is from a 701 builder with some home built skis
on Yahoo, and here are a couple of messages... this is what he had to say:
"hi all took some time but the new skis are installed and tested
perfectly this past weekend. performed very well on the snow which b/c
of the recent thaw surface was very dense and hard. i can pull the
plane with one finger on prop on top of this stuff. because of the
cant in the main gear the outer edge of the ski is lower then i would
like but still performed very well on the grass.all skis are 15" wide
mains are 48" long and nw is 36" top speed was down about 5mph and is
noticable less responsive to full throttle up. A mushy 4ooo rpm to
5200 in flight, the engine responds like normal but the asi is a
little slower to catch up. climbout was still impressive as ever.
total weight of all hardware is 60 lbs. so not so good for passenger
carrying but at least spent 2hours sipping around doing t & g's with
the bunch of hanger buddies only able to watch from the snowbanks.
will post some pics soon but will look like carbon copies of the ones
listed at zenith."
"just uploaded some photos. mains are 14 x 48 x 1/8 alum sheet with a
3.5" incline. 2- 1 x 2" rails on 12" centers stitch welded with a 15 "
wide sheet of 1/8 uhmw popriveted to bottoms. an bolts for mounting
hardware and clips. rest of the cable, bungii and hardware is local
building material. the nw pivot is a shouldered bushing machined to
size witha 5/16 x 2 an bolt and locknut. the "s" brace is a just in
case support. I can remove the ski without touching the nw axle. tail
wheels are hockey pucks board and oilite bushings pressed into."

The photos and text came through loud and clear, Ron, and thanks.
His skis are similar to my old ones, in that they let the tire
penetrate (in my opinion) too far, and he has the "cheese slicer"
effect going for (against) him. I can't imagine this arrangement
weighing 60 lbs, either, but it DOES include a nosewheel ski, which I
don't have the equivalent of for my tailwheel....haven't found the
need for it yet.
No need for skis around here...Lower Michigan....as the ground is
clear of snow, but it's 3 degrees F. above zero, clear as a bell and
wind-less, and I'm gonna go fly some lakes!

ohh caa caa... here we go again lol... What are the average snow depths? mine have 780 sq. in. and I would not want any less for the snow I fly off of most of the time. I had them in knee deep powder and they performed great. Only sunk in about 4 inches or so. Now to make a tail ski and I will be golden.

We had 11C ~ 51F temps here today. Ceiling was minimal with several rain
showers. We lost over a foot of snow today but more to go yet.

I don't think those are carpet.....they look like paver blocks to me,
Pat. Look closer and you'll see that where the diamond pattern is,
there is no ski attached to the hanging brackets. And these aren't
Ron's skis....he was just posting the link.

When I was digging into ski sizes, it *seemed* that all the skis that
I measured were built under the assumption of about 1-2 pounds of
airplane weight per square inch of ski. That's a wild --- guess, but
again, deep powdery snow requires more flotation/area, and hard-
packed snow needs less area, at least from what I've been able to
gather.

Lynn C Don't know if you are a skier C but that applies to downhill skiing also. Powder skies are much wider than carving skies.

I haven't skied in 20 years, and haven't kept up with that sport, but
what you say sounds right.

hello lynn: its odd that you guys are talking about my skis. i got some of my inspiration from looking at the picture posts of yours. The originals idea came from robert nelson in the zenair .com posts of skis. http://www.zenithair.com/stolch701/7-photo81.html library #81...His are of the blue 701 at the top and about 2/3 down the list. I emailed him for info and he supplied me with some spec and more pics. .some others on the site show a guy standing on his skies so i got some relative sizes from that. I was just winging it as to the sizes. I just now did some calculations and came up with just under 2lb /sq in at full load. The pictures are just after traversing a 6' deep snowdrift. The plane sank about 8" but was able to hold the nw higher with rpm and backstick. I walked back through the same drift and sank past my knees. My size 12'vs couldnt hold up the 200lb hulk.there is a fair amout to cheese slicing and the wheels protrude about 2". the home field is grass with many short hops to pavement so i wanted both.
yes the other pic is of the nw ski under construction detailing the machined pivot separate from the nw axle....including pavers in the hanger
