I am trying to get an idea as to how much to charge to paint a fellow
builders 750. I have painted cars professionally for years and of
course painted my own plane, SkyHawg. I want to be reasonable, but at
the same time I'm not doing it for fun or to have something to do.

So, I was wondering about how much some of you have paid to have your
planes "PROFESSIONAL PAINTED", including all materials?

If some of you could help me out, I would appreciate it.

Hi Larry;
I went looking for quotes on a 701, I got two one just over $6,000 and the other just under that figure. Both from painters on the local airport. I decided to paint the plane my self.

do not archive.

Larry,
I'd price my time and let the materials selected by the owner finish the
cost to him. I'd think keeping with not being a professional,
you'd price your time at something between $2500 and $3000. If you're
not prepping the plane, move that down to $1000 to $1500.

Larry,

When I had my 601xl painted I received two quotes. One was for $6000 and
the other $3500. The guy with the lower quote told me that's what he
charges (adjusted for the size of airplane) if it's bare aluminum because
stripping paint is a lot of work. I went with the lower quote and I'm happy
with the paint job.

You just assumed that, "I'd think keeping with not being a
professional.". You are right with you suggestions for a non
professional/backyard painter doing the job, maybe even a little high.
I certainly don't take offense because you intended none. You just
don't know me.

I'm certainly not trying to be pompous and anyone who knows me will tell
you I don't have a pompous bone in my body. But, I don't think it hurts
to tell you and the others a little about my painting back ground. So
that when I give an opinion about painting it comes from many years of
experience, mostly professional. I'm not always right, but I didn't
just read it somewhere either.

I have painted four of my aircraft one of which won Rotorcraft Grand
Champion in 2001. I have painted 500+ cars professional for individuals
and dealers. I have all the facilities and equipment. Being retired,
I'd rather be doing something else, but this guy will need his plane
painted and I don't know what to charge. I don't want to rip him off
but at the same time it is a lot of work and time involved to do it
right, and there ain't no other way but right. More suggestions please?.

Larry, no one can rightly answer that question for you, the average paint
job Is anywhere's from 4K-8K. Nevertheless you have painted several planes
in the past, you know the time involved, with 500+ cars behind you then you
know your quality, as I read your letter you have more experience then
anyone on the list and are best Qualified to answer your own question. Sit
down figure the time you will put into it then multiply it by the value of
your life experience and the quality of your personal time, also add in a
flavor of friendship or acquaintance. You will come out with a # that is
appropriate for you to charge. IF the fellow agrees then your both happy, I
the does not agree then you can discuss it or move on to your own project
and be happy not to have to do all that work for someone else.

I have the experience myself to paint the interior of a plane with an HVLP,
however I do not have the facilities or the personal ability to do a
professional job in shop. I farm out the paint job all the time. I had a
local Farm equipment company do a job and it was one of the better works
which cost me $1500 for them to just shoot it, I did all prep work, I had a
local chap like yourself do a job for $4500 and he did all the work . I used
a collision center and the total was $7,000 all this Is in Canadian funds if
that makes a difference.

I hope this reference helps a bit. However, honestly only you know the value
of your retirement time.

Thanks for the advice, but what I was really after was what people have
actually paid so I could feel that I was giving him a fair price and at
the same time not shorting myself to much. Painting cars and airplanes
are apples and oranges. Most cars per square foot take a lot more prep
that a newly build airplane. You really can't make a comparison. And
when I painted my aircrafts, I did it piece meal and didn't keep track
of time involved. So you see how much easier it is to ask around than
pull a price out of my head? That's my rationale. Take care, Larry, N1345L

Hi Larry,
There is a shop northeast of here that has painted a good number of
light aircraft for $6K to $9K (RV size planes) and that money is their
living. They are scheduled ahead and it takes a month or two after you
bring the plane in. I painted my aircraft, having worked in the auto
refinishing business as a kid, but prep and paint still took from April
to November to get it done for $2800. To price yourself within the
envelope with paint material prices at nearly $1500 and more, there
isn’t a large area to work within if you want the work. If you enjoy the
work, that helps a lot anyway. If you’re going for competitive quality,
the time you spend will use up the extra made from a high quote as well.
As Mark says, the price has to be your decision. I do appreciate the
question as we all find it necessary to ask, even ourselves. It’s
sometimes impossible to be charitable, make it worthwhile and still feel
like it’s worth doing when one’s tasks are based on a high standard of
workmanship.
