Ben,
Probably common sense says pay the freight, but I must confess, it sounds like an adventure.. I live in Costa Mesa, CA and have considered the same trip for the rest of my kit. I bought the tail and paid the freight last year. Plus it would give you the opportunity to visit the factory. When we started on the RV-8 several years ago we went to VAN’s and toured the factory. It gives you a sense of connection you might need when you are 90% done with 90% to go. On the other hand, that sure is a long drive.

For a 4000 miles trip, I would just pay the freight. But, it is just my 2 cents

I can lay a 8 foot board inwith room to spare when I take out the passenger seat. I can fit a washer anddryer in the back and close the hatch. So the plan was to build a 4x6x12 box and mount it on the roof and puteverything else inside.
