Fellow Europaphiles,

I dug the attached e-mail from my Junk Mail Box today. The address block was:
From: karelvranken(at)hotmail.com (karelvranken(at)hotmail.com)

I'd guess that this is a pretty neat variation on the old "Nigeria Scam." Any one else receive this?
Or did Karel really go off to Nigeria and misplace his wallet and ask some of us to send him big $$$$ in care of Mr. Fowler?

Yes Bob, I got it too.

I suspect the name "CURTIS WOOD FOWLER" may be an alias for a certain Mr Wilson of whom you are very familiar. Certainly, Mr Fowler would be every bit as honourable I'm sure !!

I'm surprised Karel never debunked it but maybe he doesn't know anything about it.

Strange things happen with all this marvellous technology we have nowadays. I have even been getting spam from MYSELF lately !!

I get spam from myself too, I was told it's important not to answer it,
its a way of checking that the address is active isn't it?

I use www.spamcop.net to filter my emails - it's very good at getting
rid of unwanted emails. You do have to be wary of it filtering email
from the Europa List.

One of the techniques for filtering Spam is for the test of sending an
email test 'ping' to the email source, if it responds then it's more
likely to be genuine- hence if a spammer can get your address into the
'reply-to' portion of the email it's more likely to get through.

Hello Graham,

I wouldn't know if it is a way of checking if the address is active or not.
It's all smoke and mirrors stuff to me !

I use Mailwasher and on one of the Spam emails to myself, I bounced it and
alas!, that came back to me too.

Cheers

Bob, et al,

I too received the email and responded as follows...I never got an acknowledgement from Karel and assume that his address got hijacked in some manner...no one attempted to respond to my quiz!
(I have however received the first plea for money which evaded my spamblocker...in French no less...serves me right!)

Karel,

At the risk of irritating you, the following message just doesn't ring true. Is it possible your email account has been appropriated by others?
Could you please authenticate your message and that I am communicating with you by providing the following information:
1. Is your Europa an XS model or a Classic?...trigear, or mono?
2. With what engine is YOUR Europa powered?
3. Who was the top technical advisor at the Europa company until he left for the LAA?
4. What is your mother tongue?
5. What is Ivan's last name? What is Don's last name?
6. What is Tim's last name in NZ?
