I purchased my CJ directly from the Chinese government a number of years ago. As part of the agreement, I also purchased an original towbar, a jack set and a complete set of engine/airframe service tools. I found the Chinese towbar to be somewhat difficult and time consuming to use. Instead, I normally use a two section towbar designed to fit the AA1 and AA5 Series Grumman aircraft. Fits over the nose gear axle perfectly. The T-handle is a bit short, but works on a ramp. To get the CJ in and out of the hangar, I adapted a handle extension that will also allow it to be coupled to a small garden tractor if so desired.
The good thing is the towbar design will fail (i.e.: bend) before damage to the nose gear occurs. Still need to be careful.

Dave, Dave ;^) Tongue in cheek...Pipe thread, is pipe thread!
I did forget to mention that I used caps at the ends of the handle...that way I could fill the towbar with Marvel Mystery Oil to prevent rust, detonation, and lead deposits from building up inside (after taking a couple of swigs for good health... ;^)

Jeff - knowing your attention to detail & authenticity, were you able to
find suitable metric threaded pipe for this unique item, or did you simply
settle for standard U.S. threads?

Good to know! I assume you wear a flight suit while hand-tugging with this "marvelous" unit & that there are acceptable levels of ambiant CO present. Have you experienced uneven oil-feed from one side of the handle?

My only concern with filling the handle with MMO, Dave & Jeff, is the potential for sparking when the handle is inserted into the nose wheel hub. Therefore, wisdom dictates wearing Nomex gloves and a helmet with the visor down in addition to your Nomex flight suit. ...Blitz

Air show pilots use smoke oil in place of MMO.

I use a standard, hand-held Mooney towbar. Why, because I used to have a Mooney and it fits.

Frank,
$100,000 airplane, $10 tow bar, now that's priceless!
Fortunately I have a metal fabrication shop (partners in a company that builds race cars), so I used scrap chrome-moly tubing.
I found a piece that fit into the front axel, then used 1 5/8 tubing (bent in a tubing bender) to bring the pulling point centered on the front wheel.
There is a 1" cross bar to hold onto when pulling or pushing. The tow bar weighs about 10 Lbs.
I have been meaning to make a second tow bar that fits on a trailer hitch, but have not found the time.
I am not sure how different the CJ is then the Yak. Picture by req.

[quote]Now if there is a tow bar to laugh at, I think I win the prize. I used two 8' long 2x6's on edge. I nailed blocks between them to space it to fit over the nose wheel. I drilled a horizontal hole through the 2x6's for a piece of emt conduit, that pases through the nose wheel axel. On the other end, I brought the 2x6's together. nailed an oak 2x4 flat on the bottom, to make like a tongue. I drilled a 2 1/4" hole in the tongue, so I can use a 2" trailer ball on the end of a fork on my fork lift. It looks funky, but works real well. I used all scrap lumber, and it took less than an hour to fabricate. Picture by request.
