Hi Sabrina,
Conventional wisdom - if you survive the first 6 months of motorcycle
riding then you have a long life expectancy. Just drive like
everyone out there is trying to kill you - because they are.

Paul is right Sabrina. I think one of the major reasons that aviators make good motorcyclists, and vice versa, is we tend to have an acute sense of situational awareness.
I drive the motorcycle very defensively and it pays. Fifty years of riding without an accident. Good luck.

Sabrina,
Ride as if no one can see you. It only takes a thumb width at arms length to make a motorcycle and rider disappear. You are invisible but not invulnerable.

I'm planning on riding mine down to SnF this year.

Psychologically people judge the distance of a "car" by the spacing of the
headlights. So a motorcycle looks like a car that is very far away.
Also riding a bike should make you very aware of the road surface - wet
leaves or sand aren't very important to a car but they can dump a bike.

Sabrina,
Congrats on the new bike! As for advice, I have been racing motorcycles for a little over 30 years and I still do not have a street license, I just don't feel safe riding on the road! And that brings me to my point. Most of the people out there driving cars, are half asleep or thinking about anything but what they are doing. Practice, practice practice, before you go out on the roads. Be very aware, even behind you.
Have fun, bikes are a hoot!

Sabrina,
If you have not already, take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation beginners rider course. I took one in Illinois years ago when I was in college. Look them up on the web. Most, if not all, states allow graduation from these courses to substitute for the riding exam at the BMV station.
Good luck and use a good helmet and riding gear.
