My kitfox III has stock tires on it. I believe they are 16X6.5X8. A friend
gave me a couple new 18X8.5X8 tires which are of course wider. Will they
fit the stock wheels?

Pete, 18X8.5X8 tires came with my Kit. I have the Douglas ATV wheels. I have also put some clown tires (Kingfox) tires on the same wheels. They are even bigger.

I think they will work. I have ~100hrs on a set of 21x12x8 with are mounted
KF IV. I also just bought the same tires for the speedster that I am
building.

So, help me understand this; The tire numbering system is radiusXwidthXplys, right? The original wheels were 6" wide, so how do you put a 8.5" or 12" wide tire on a 6" wide rim? Do you just get a smaller inner tube, or is it ok to use the wider tires because we never put in the full air pressure or something?

Ryan, the original kitfox wheels are Douglas ATV wheels. ATV tire size is Tire outside diameter X Tire widest section width X wheel diameter. Tire width is commonly 2 to 4 inches wider than wheel width.
The Kingfox tires are 21 X 12 X 8. Yes that is pushing the width limits to put it on a 6 inch wide wheel. I took my Kingfox tires and Douglas wheels to the tire shop and asked the guy, "Will these tires work on these wheels". He said yup and mounted them.
When inflated the widest section of the tire is 9 inches. This combination of tires and wheels has been used on Kitfoxes for a while now and I haven't heard of any problems. Experimental has its advantages.
