I am starting to look at panel mount radios for my 701 and not happy with the prices I am seeing.
Does anyone have a good suggestion for a panel mount? I am just looking for a single COM ( no NAV ).

Thanks,
John Marzulli

MGL’s 3.125 inch form-factor comm-only radio is shipping in some parts of the world and about to ship in the US pending some FCC paper work (the actual FCC testing is complete). Technical details here:

http://www.mglavionics.co.za/rf.htm

According to the US dealer the price in the US will be “approx $995”. Their site is sales(at)mglavionics.com (sales(at)mglavionics.com)

Specs look good. Looks South African made?
I'd avoid getting a microair. When they work, they are OK, but many that I have seen and troubleshot give a lot of headaches. I hear XCom is OK.

Yup, MGL’s HQ is in South Africa. So their whole line is made there: EFIS, engine monitors, single round instruments. But the dealers around the world (especially the US dealer) provide excellent support. And the head of the company and chief designer (Rainier) posts on the user-to-user group on Yahoo.

The situation on XCom is unclear. I have one but haven’t tested it yet. Chris Sinfield posted this on the 601 list back on December 23rd:

“Also made in Australia and a cloner of the 760. but out of experience if you get a good one its good, but our club had 10 in a group buy and 8 had to be exchanged or returned for repair within 12 months..

Maybe a bad batch but it was our experience and has turned me away from them until their reliability improves.. True Mr Coats replaced or repaired each one so good customer back up for XCom”

Xcom had problems with their assembly houses in Australia. Here is an excerpt from an Oct 2008 joint press release from Narco and XCOM titled “Narco Avionics and XCOM Avionics, Manufacturing Partnership Agreement":

"Since the radios inception the XCOM has been built in Australia with a large majority (approximately 90%) of our product being shipped internationally with most of this going to the USA. Production issues in Australia have forced us to look for another manufacturer, we tried several manufacturers in Australia but none of these could offer reliable and quality production which basically meant we had a fantastic product that was being let down by poor manufacturing which was out of our control. The best way around this is to find a manufacturer who is already familiar with avionics and has the ability to manufacture correctly to TSO standards, will stand behind their work and most importantly take pride in what they are doing!

For this reason we have entered into a cooperation with Narco Avionics who are the world's longest standing avionics business. This partnership gives XCOM the complete confidence that our product will be manufactured and tested beyond the standards which are required for efficient and continuous, long-term , durable operations. It really means we can stand behind our product with more confidence than ever before and it also gives Narco exposure to the LSA, experimental and Ultralight market which is rapidly expanding."

Since mine was built in Australia we will see how lucky I am.

Have used the VAL760 in 3 different planes for the last 15 yrs or so and have had flawless results, ultra simple and can talk for a hundred miles on clear days.

I have had the same results with my two VAL760's. Great range and clear.

Put another three hours on my 701 today, 35 more to go.

John: I recently installed a Flightline panel mount radio in my 701.

So far so good. It was about $700 at Aircraft Spruce.
