I was under the impression that our plans/kit number would become our aircraft SN. Looking through the FAA Registry I see that most the 701s are registered as 7-XXXX. So I’m guessing that my SN would be 7-6267 since my plans are SN 6267. Is that correct? What will the 750 builders do?

I just made my RV-10 serial number 0001. If I ever build another RV-10 it will be 0002. You’re the manufacturer, you determine the serial number. Using your kit number is fine, as long as it is unique to YOUR production.

The serial number on the plans is just sequential number, nothing more,
it's basically how many plans they have sold. You can give your plane
any serial number you want. Your "N" number can also be what every you
want as long as it isn't taken and is within the FAA rules. My
serial number is LM-001. You don't even have to call your plane a Zenith
701 if you don't want too, mine is a LM-701.
Take care, Larry, N1345L
