When trying to understand the operation or behavior of any given system (eng
temps in your case) the more information you have about what is happening
"under the hood" the better. $200 for a temp display unit sounds reasonable
but $40 per sensor sounds excessive given that thermocouple wire is cheap as
hell.
As to monitoring all 9 cyls on an M14....I think it would be worth it. Not
so much as an everyday management tool while flying behind your engine but
to report back to this list the results you get from cylinder by cylinder
temp monitoring during various flight regimes. I suspect what you report
back will be a monotonous set of data that shows little variation between
individual cylinder temps....at least with any temp differences due to
mixture variances.
The M-14 has a supercharger that atomizes the fuel charge in a fairly
uniform manner so cylinder to cylinder temp variations likely have little to
do with mixture control (As you know, we have little control of the fuel
mixture on an M-14).
The Russians thought that monitoring only a few cylinders was sufficient so
they designed their temp monitoring circuit in that light.
But by all means, buy the system (spend some to help the economy) and then
report back to this list the results of your findings. I'd like to see if
this prediction is in line with reality.

Thanks for the input. I guess I should have mentioned I have the Housai, but I get your drift. I'll look around for a better price on the sending units!
