All-
Just making sure. On an SPST toggle switch, the center terminal is hot and the top terminal is switched, right?

Hi Bill,

An SPST switch only has two contacts. They can be treated the same. They are either connected or not.

Hi Bill,
A SPST (single pole, single throw) switch only has two terminals. My
guess, assuming you have a three terminal switch, is that you have in
your hand a SPDT switch. The best way to fully understand its operation
is to use a multimeter and investigate its function in all switch
positions. There...just enough to be dangerous!

For a SPST switch, the power comes in on one terminal and and out the
other when the switch is on. As far as functioning is concerned, it
really doesn't matter which terminal the wire are hooked to, the
switch will function the same. For a DT switch, the center terminal is
usually the common terminal and the hot wire is connected there. Just
for the sake of uniformity, to make troubleshooting easier at some
future date, it's a good idea to connect the hot wire to the center
terminal on both types of switch.

SPST? A SPST switch only has two terminals so it doesn’t matter what way you wire it. A SPDT (D for “double”) has a center terminal and two outer terminals. The common “pole” is the center terminal. But use an Ohm meter or test lamp to check which of the outer terminals is connected to the center pole for which position of the toggle. Depending n the switch’s mechanical internals it can be the side the handle is on or the opposite.

No, it's only two terminal. I'm just doing a final review of my wiring
before mounting the panel. No big deal, if the terminals work the other way
I'll just pull the connectors off and reverse them.
