Anyone mount an extra Odyssey 680 on the firewall? I am planning on using the Piper battery box and mounting it diagonally to pick up two holes on the diagonal stiffener.and creating a couple of aluminum doublers for the other four holes. The holes in the battery box are .29 which means they will have to be bushed for an AN3 or enlarged and bushed for an AN4.

If you’re using a PC-680 battery, why not just buy the install kit for the RV7 or 7A?

I'm using 2 of the 680s, both mounted aft of the bulkhead in 2 of Van's battery boxes (2 batt busses).

Works like a champ.

so am I but I think the third on the firewall will provide more flexibility to load the baggage area. Since the fuel burn moves the CG aft , the pitch controls get lighter than I like. Also my main batteries don't seem to get recharged completely given the fixed output from the alternator and the long run to the batteries. Two batteries to start works fine but sometimes a single battery start is slow

I think that is what I have but it came from Aircraft Spruce. A black aluminum box made for the PC 680.

David, I have thought about going to a single 680 on the firewall. My CG is aft and 4 adults is tough with the CG that way. You say cranking on one 680 can be slow…….how often to you crank with 1 batt. Would it be worth me testing the single battery config?

I think it will depend on the following factors: 1. Weather - if it's cold, it will be tougher to turn over.  2. Compression - if your engine has any increase in compression from stock it'll be tougher to turn over. 3. Dependability - Does it fire right away,,, every time? Another consideration is hot starts, sometimes they can be a problem.
What I can tell you is that mine will start with one battery, but if I have a problem of any sorts, it's really nice to flip that second switch.... spins it right up.
That's my 2 cents.

What does Van's have in 410RV? It probably does more starts, especially hot starts than any other -10 is likely to see. IIRC the plans call for RG25 battery?

I use both batteries for start, which seems to work fine so far.
At the suggestion of both Aviation Consumer and Light Plane Maintenance, I bought 2 battery tenders and keep them hooked to my batteries if I'm not going to fly for a week or so. Remember that it takes at least an hour of flying to recharge the voltage lost during start.....
