List,
Have the 3300 with FWF kit from Jab.USA. Have been reading everything I can find on "contactors" ( AeroElectric, various Matronics lists, etc.). Do not understand most of it... so, my question is: Do I need to add one or more "Contactor" to my installation?
I am not an EE, nor much of an electrician...just trying to understand what the Contactor might buy me. Planning an all-glass panel, if that makes any difference?
Please don't throw electrical theory at me...I'm just looking for a simple explanation why I should or should not consider putting contactors on. If so, which one?
Thanks,
Mike

Contactors are nothing more than solenoids like on the starter of your car.
The aircraft needs a continuous duty contactor if you want to have a master
switch for your electrical system. This should be located near the battery.
The starter contactor is placed in the battery area also so the starter
cable is not "hot" all the time. It should be a contactor built for
intermittent duty. Both are available from Aircraft Spruce.

Whether or not you need a master contactor depends on how much current
is being supplied to your system and where your battery is mounted. If
you only have around 30 amps to control and your battery is mounted
ahead of the firewall, you probably don't really need a master relay.
You just have to make sure that nothing is drawing any current when
your master switch or circuit breaker is off or you will will find the
battery dead after sitting for a few days.
If you have very much more than 30 amps or your battery is mounted
behind the seats with large cables running through the cabin, you
probably should use a master relay. The master relay will isolate the
battery from all circuits, including the starter circuit. The starter
circuit can draw hundreds of amps and has no over-current protection.
If the main battery cable to the starter shorts out for any reason,
the results can be very serious. This could easily happen in a crash
landing.
