|

Listees:
I am concerned about the tubeless nose gear tire on my 701 going
flat and resulting in a greatly reduced prop clearance with the
ground. I had been considering installing a tube in the tire and was
surprised when the April Popular Mechanics had this to say on page
112: "Don't ever install a tube in a tire that says "tubeless on the
sidewall"... The ribbed inside surface of the tubeless tire is not
finished to accept a tube. Tube-type tires have smoother surfaces,
without any outstanding ribs or texture to wear out that tube
prematurely."
Does anyone know if the above applies to the tubeless tire provided
with the 701 kit? Has anyone installed a tube in their 701 nose gear
and flown it for a significant period of time?

Zenith drop shipped the Matco tires and brakes to me. After having problems with the tubeless design I called Matco.
The guy at Matco happily sold me the correct tubes for the tires. Just make sure that you powder the insides appropriatley and keep the PSI to acceptable levels.
Good luck!

I put tubes in all of mine. Those tubeless ones drove me nuts and I didn't
trust them. Maybe I'm wrong but the psi on such a light airplane is so low
anyway. I have the same rims on my main gear on the Kitfox and they were
supplied with tubes from Matco or Grove, one or the other.
That sure may be true with car tires, though.

My first 701 and the one I'm building now have tube type tires. They are generic turf tires. (Not suitable for highway use" is printed on the side). We didn't put tubes in the first one, per the plans, and never had a problem.
I wondered at the time if that was correct, but followed the plans, thinking the designer knew what he was talking about. About once every two months, we would air the tires up, usually about 15 lbs all around. They would leak down about 2-3 lbs over that span.
Not that I would recommend that to others, but that is what we did and we won't put tubes in this one either, since we had success with the first set of tires. Some wear suspenders and a belt because it makes them feel better, so if you feel better with tubes in your tires I say go for it.

The tires I got from Zenith, say in big black letters on the side "Tube
Type". However, Zenith recommends running them tubeless. They furnish
tubeless stems and "O" rings. I put tubes in mine. I trust the tire
manufacturers more than Zenith. Everything with Zenith is about saving
weight. Larry, N1345L

Not sure about doing this in airplanes though I cant see a problem at the 701 ground speed.
But my dad has been putting tubes in tubeless tires since I can remember and driving them on the road. And believe me that depression era man gets his moneys worth out of his tires, so they spend a lot of miles at to me, unsafe tread thickness, with no problems.
just my $.01 worth

My kit was CZAW supplied with the Matco rims and "not for highway" "Tube type" tyres.
But after a year one tyre would leak slowly and at that time I discovered there are no tubes in there. I got a tube from ACS and fitted it, the leak was a thin area in the inside of the tyre that was venting out the tread groove. Four years on the other two are still OK as tubeless and I will fit tubes when they need it. What usually gets tyres around here is the gorse (braken?) prickles that sometimes inhabit bush runways. These will flatten tube or tubeless equally well. I run around 24 - 28 psi
