Guys...a couple more pixs to update those posted on Feb. 24th.
In the 1st, the top fairing has been cut into 3 pcs, flanges added,
and everything clecoed back in place.
The 2nd shows the same on the lower fairing; upper and lower have been
floxed and taped together along the elliptical trailing edge.
The 3rd & 4th pixs, w/ flaps partially extended, show the closure
panels on both flap and fuselage, necessary to close the voids which
would otherwise be open to the airflow as the flaps deploy. As you can
see, my fuselage cradle restricts flap extension. The closure panel on
the flap (#3) really stiffened up the innermost corner of the
underside of the curved flap extension which otherwise would have been
flapping in the breeze. The whole thing is now rock-solid, except for
the forward piece which stays with the wing and will flex much like
the standard wing fairing under flight loads. These last two pixs also
show no more clecos as the pieces are now bonded to flap and fuselage.
The deployment/retraction action is smooth and the joints passed
inspection. It's all still pretty rough, but I don't anticipate any
problems finishing and feathering everything into the fuselage.
All this piecing is necessary only to allow for wing stowage on the
standard monowheel trailer...I now have 8 different moulds for the
requisite parts port & starboard.
No performance data as yet, but Jeff B. is still planning on doing
some flight tests w/ the fairings mounted on his trigear, Baby Blue.
Anyone with an interest in replicating or installing some version of
these can contact me off list. Check out also my matronics-photoshare

Hi Fred,
Well done on constructing the wing root fairings - they look really good.
I'll be interested to see how the flight testing goes. The first picture with the flaps deployed seems to show two very large vortex generators (i.e the fairings attached to the flaps). I wonder how the aircraft will behave at high angles of attack and whether you will get increased turbulence on the tailplanes?
Regards,
Phil

Hi Phil,
I seem to recall that your field is aerodynamics, so I take your post
very seriously...the last thing I would want is to disturb the airflow
over the tailplanes. Would you care to elaborate?
I've pondered at length over just how the flap deployment is
accommodated while minimizing the overall width of the fuselage so
that when the wings are detached, they can be stowed on the monowheel
trailer.
There are, of course, a variety of ways to cut the upper and lower
fairings and vary the amount of fairing which deploys with the flaps.

Phil,
Attached are some pixs of Justin Kennedy's Classic which has a similar
set up to mine. Note the detail pixs of the underside and flap. He has
been flying for a number of years and has not reported any untoward
events or disturbing flight characteristics. He believes his fairings
have enhanced his speed and fuel economy.

this might give you an idea, never a problem imho. The unmodified flap
will still cause a large vortex anyway

Hi Graham...Justin Kennedy is, hopefully today, completing some flight
tests with G-ZTED which is equipped with some substantial wingroot
fairings (designed by Justin) which are similar to mine. When Justin
has his data organized, it will be posted. I will say now however,
that last week Justin performed some tests at high AOAs w/ flaps and
gear down specifically to explore the area of Phil's concern and found
no untoward behavior.
Justin's flights scheduled for today are to follow some flight
profiles suggested by David Joyce which should, when compared with
results when flown with a similarly equipped Europa but with the stock
wingroot fairings, may give some indication as to how the special
fairings increase flight efficiencies and enhance L/D ratios.
In addition to Justin's flight testing, Jeff Behrnes will soon be
doing some flight tests with his XS trigear, Baby Blue, both with, and
without, the fairings which I have made.
Stay tuned.
