I am trying to decide which engine I should use in my 701. I have narrowed it down to one of 3 engines the Jabiru 2200 Jabiru 3300 or the Rotax 912 uls 100 HP. I have talked to Roger at Zenith he recommends the Rotax. I have not spoken with any of the Jabiru 701 builders. I would like to here your comments if you have installed either of the engines in your 701. Mike

Mike,
I have the 912ULS and really like its performance. Plus, you can add floats in the future.

I have a lot of short grass strips here in NC that benefit from the extra zip of 100hp. I also have no cooling problems.

Mike:

Your three choices are all good ones. I would agree with Roger if he were the one supporting the Rotax but I have read of too many maintenance problems and the lack of support from the factory that I would advise caution in that selection. The price of the Rotax is also, or was, significantly higher than the Jabiru choices. I chose the 3300 only because I will be operating out of an 8,000 foot grass strip and want to get at least 85 hp at that altitude. If you will be operating mainly from fields below 5,000 msl the 85 hp from the 2200 should be sufficient for most normal operations.

Mike,
I agree with whats been said. I use the 2200 and the choice came down to whether I wanted to maintain a liquid cooled setup with gearbox and multiple carbs where one will do, or go air cooled direct drive layout with some loss of prop efficiency and top end performance.

Another reason is the cost locally to me is 2:1 in favour of the Jabiru, and parts cost is also low - and I havent needed anything much.

The plane can fly and perform on any powerplant that meets the plan's specs., just read them carefully its really expensive to change engine mounts and cowls later.

Mike,
I don't mean to toss a monkey wrench into your gears but if you are considering the Jabiru 3300; you should also look at the Corvair.

Just one more option... Smile
