Hi Dale,
You should try Linux or Mac OSX. With the Unix command shell, you'll
get an order of magnitude better control in the command line environment
versus any version of Windows. On top of that, you also get the GUI
with either of these OSs.
If you want to try a version of Linux, go to http://centos.org/ and you
can download and legally run the Centos distribution for free that is
100% Redhat compatible. There are several other distributions that you
could run for free, too (Ubuntoo, Debian, and Gentoo to name a few).
