A few days ago there was a discussion about serial numbers.
Some were of the opinion that the builder assigns his/her own serial number.
I found the following text (my underline) in the "601 price order form" http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/data/601-price-orderform.pdf

2. This contract permits the buyer to build one (1) airplane (or part of it) for recreational and educational purposes only. The type of aircraft and the Drawings serial number must be visibly marked on the vertical tail or fuselage sides of the aircraft.

Happy building

Hi Carlos,

There are two different serial numbers in your question. One identifies the drawings you bought from Zenith and is used by them to identify legitimate builders. The other goes on the metal data plate for your plane and various government documents. It is the identification made by the manufacturer (you) that identifies the particular plane for your purposes.

Best regards,

It should be pointed out that the vast majority of the Zenith 601XL builders did use the factory supplied serial number as their aircraft's serial number.

That is a Zenith requirement and does not apply to the FAA registration. You can create your own serial number for the registration……..But, thanks for pointing it out. If I take the plunge and build a 750, I now know I have to put the Zenith number on the airframe also.

In fact when I sent in my original FAA registration paperwork I assigned
my own serial # of 001 and of course the kit bill of sale had the zenith
serial #. The FAA examiner returned the paperwork and asked me to use
only one serial # and that had to be the kit serial #. Added several
more weeks to the registration process to get this straightened out.

There you go, I guess it depends on who you deal with in the FAA. Had my
kit number on the Vans bill of sale and used 001 on my faa
registration.........

I had heard of this problem cropping up from time to time which is why I used the Zenith number. Plus I figured using my first and middle initials in the N# was enough ego stroking for one airplane and that any more would just add weight. Smile

Indeed. I didn't get to pick my serial number at all, and it didn't bother
me. Nobody knows about that when they see the airplane, after all...
