I am using the ignition switch supplied by Zenith, sources from ACS.
Playing with it I wanted to do a quick hookup to a small 12V lantern battery and confirm how it is supposed to work using a multimeter. Using the diagram I hooked up some wires using test clips.
What I found was that the start position worked as it should. When the ignition was set to "BOTH", "LEFT" or "RIGHT" I failed to see any current flow off the wires towards where the P-Leads should be.
From the left and right leads I returned the current back to the battery.
Am I:
1) wrong to close the circuit off the left and right ignition leads for my test scenario?
2) Should I actually expect to see power on the left or right leads in my scenario?
Thanks in advance!

A magneto switch doesn’t feed power to the mags through the P-leads. It only grounds them to kill one or both mags.

John, most aircraft ignition switches ground the ignition to shut the engine down. In off, both P-Leads are grounded. In the right poistion, the left P-Lead is grounded, in the left position, the right P-Lead will be shorted to ground. You should not power this switch at all. Even the start terminal should be a path for the solenoid coil voltage to ground.
Hope this helps

Here is some more information: The common off-left-right-both-start switch from Aircraft Spruce has two terminals on it labeled “GRD”. The shields on the p-leads connect to the GRD terminal in the center of the switch. I’ve attached a snippet from diagram Z-27 in the AeroElectric update on page 36 at the link below. The table shows what actually happens inside the switch.

Thanks,
That clears it up!
I was under the impression that power was flowing out of the switch to the p-leads closing a solenoid on them ( or something else ). It makes much more sense that power is flowing out of the mags to the P-Leads.
